The introduction of an entirely new chronograph movement isn't an event that happens often. In this day and age, most manufacturers build upon existing designs. The cal 37-01 is an entirely new construction that seems to encompass an integral calendar (Panorama Date) and power reserve indicator. It looks to be the case from the apparent location of the pushers in comparison with the winding crown and date actuator; I'm checking with Our Man in Glashütte about this.
If my hunch is correct, then this is possibly a unique construction. There are innumerable dedicated chronograph movements fitted with modular calendars and reserve indicators, but integrated? Most unusual, and typically Glashütte Original.
The harmony of the dial design, with subdials and Panorama Date aperture in a pleasing configuration, along with tastefully integrated power reserve indicator, is going to be the compelling reason for many who decide to acquire one. The substance of Glashütte Original - their aesthetic, devotion to tradition, impeccable quality, and ability to conceive, develop, and manufacture their own movements - is intrinsically appreciated by all connoisseurs of watchmaking. The essence, though, can be ephemeral; the lilt and subtlety of G O design escapes many who are more attuned to classical virtues.
My sense is that this latest effort on the part of G O will be appreciated by a wider audience than their established admirers.
