No, not the movie(s), your PPro avatar*.
There are a few avatar stories buried in various introductions, but I am interested in how you came to choose yours. How useful do you find the avatars to identify others? How important are they and do they lead you to make assumptions about others? Have you changed your avatar? Would you change it, or do you feel you should be consistent?
Mine is, of course, the seconds subdial from a Reverso Grand Date. It was the first watch I had used ThePuristS to research. The position of the hour and second hands were fortuitous when I took the photo, but they reminded me of a smiling face, so that became ‘me’ on the boards.
What’s your avatar story?
Andrew

...so I doubt I'll ever change it on PPro. It's a picture of my favorite possession, a 1968 Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar. It's the material thing that I feel is most representative of me -- a little bit country and a little bit rock 'n' roll; has seen quite a bit of life, and is still a little rough around the edges; dinged up here and there, but still rockin' and making sweet music!
I always enjoy seeing other people's avatars on the boards. For me, the avatars are your "faces" when I picture you while corresponding.
Cheers,
Daos

...without pressuring yourself to be "good," I think you will be fine. More importantly, I think you will enjoy the mental (and physical exercise). When I play, it is the only time I am inside my own mind, and completely relaxed.
Cheers,
Daos
I wanted the community to get used to see the PPro "178" clock. Yes I know it looks like an odometer, but my excuse is it is a chronograph subdial
But before, my avatar on TP and PPro used to be my Journe tourbillon avatar I made from one of my past pictures. I tweaked it so it looks computer generated and thought it was unique enough to be memorable and recognizable. My ex-Journe tourbillon was the watch that REALLY got me into this dangerous world of horology, so I thought it was fitting to use as my avatar for memory sakes.

Cheers,
Anthony

...some other lowlife had already pinched the preferred avatar:

In this jurisdiction a driver who has learnt the basics, but who is still very new to the wheel, is required to spend a period ‘on probation’. Such a probationary driver is required to display on her or his car, fore and aft, a plate such as this:
As you can see, it is a ‘P’ plate. Such a ‘newbie’ is a “’P’ plater”; it seemed to translate well to the horological pursuits also.
Likewise the avatar. Here’s a clue – everyone’s favourite….
…novice.
From Wikipaedia:
A novice in canon law and tradition is a prospective member of a religious order who is being tried and being proven for suitability for admission to a religious order of priests, religious brothers, or religious sisters. After a period of time as a postulant the person will be received as a novice in a ceremony that most often involves being clothed with the traditional habit of the particular religious community. Novices are not admitted to vows until they have successfully completed the prescribed period of training. This usually lasts one year, though in some orders and communities it is two.
Hence:
Your humble correspondent has hesitatingly proffered himself as a prospective member of a [near] religious order (the broad church of PPro, founded by St Thomas of Mao) and has taken a few timid steps along the horological trail but still has so very, very much to learn.
Cheers,
pplater.

that I have alwas liked your avatar Andrew! It is in my eyes a very successful shot of Reverso elegance!
My avatar is a painting. It is by a Danish artist who mostly does cartoon style, but the day I saw this painting named "Raindog" in a gallery, I felt that it almost mirrored my mood that day. A little lonely and melancholic - almost solemn - on the outside, but really more thoughtful and pensive on the inside. And further, it also reminds me of the city in the light of early sunrise - something I have always liked.
I do enjoy looking at people's avatars here, but I don't think they could ever influence my opinion on the statements made (in either direction).
Nikolaj
PS: The most remarkable avatar here in my mind - the one that to me almost represent the person rather than the screen name - is Graham's helmet with the reproduction of the "Scream" by Munch. I love it!

What do you think?

Nikolaj
