Just another addiction to add to my addictions.
As i've mentioned here before I am addicted to
small leather goods such as wallets, notebooks,
bags etc. Also included in my addictions are
cuff links, small jewelry, watches of course and
now I have added fountain pens to the list.
Am realizing that you don't need to spend
a fortune to get a nice pen (you listening
Montblanc?). I really want a Montblanc but
can't justify the price. I have looked at Conklin,
Waterman, Parker and many others. I have a Lamy
Safari that really suits my writing needs, but have decided
another brand or two is in my future. Maybe a different
color of ink in each pen to mix things up a bit.
I share many of your “collecting” interests…perhaps I would add sunglasses!
Fountain pens have a special place in my life, especially Montblancs, and you will find adjunct collectibles including inks, leather pen cases or pouches, and papers/notebooks to add to the passion. Have fun!
Yes, finding that out, already have 3 pen cases

leather item and bottle of ink I buy it cuts into my Cartier fund. Damn addictions!!

My only addict other than cigarettes is buying the same brands.
But due to changing times, I am starting to buy different brands as either brand prices increase too much or design not to my like.

Pen wise - Mont Blanc ballpoint as the last one lasted me 20 years but I seldom use it.

Aren't we all collectors of nice objects? some of us just take it to the next level.....
More than once I found myself buying items I don't need, have no usage to or collect these items, purchased just for the pure joy of owning a nice object.
(I can later ask myself why the hell I bought it / need it, but that's another story).
Anyway, I can only guess that the connecting line is a combination of the joy of collecting, small items that are "controllable" and that don't really need special attention (like wine, bank notes etc ).
So here's my contribution for your collection, Its small, its cufflinks, its watches 
...I don't wear cufflinks but when I've seen this, I had to get it. an old 18K cufflink from Patek. with "skeletonized logo and matt brushed finish. They don't make it like this anymore.
Parker made some great ones. Waterman, too. You can have some great pens at a good price in the second hand market, from these brands.

My journey to the pen dome, especially MB, was quite short.
Bought a Marcel Proust, , Agatha Christie and a Platinum/ black "daily" Meiste stuck. The Meiste stuck got "lost" within few weeks, I know who uses it ever since, but go prove it... that what my short trip . I still own the first 2, not using them, and few vintage Parkers. all in a box somewhere.
The YouTube rabbit hole for pens, inks, papers, accessories,
notebooks etc is bottomless. Get in and you may never be heard from again.

Not sure if you are asking for some advice. If that is the case I suggest you some brands:
Sailor. The best nibs. Amazing quality/price ratio.
Platinum and Pilot/Namiki. Classic japaneses.
Pelikan, Graf Von Faber Castell or Faber Castell and Kaweco.
Twsbi.
Santini, Aurora, Visconti and Leonardo Officina Italiana.

I'm really enjoying just looking at my Namiki Chinkin Dragon and Yukari Royale Frog.
Do you have a favorite pen?
My all time favorite is the Peter the Great from Montblanc. But I also really like the Montblanc Borghese. As for the Namiki pens, I really like the FROG a lot - it's by the first female Maki-E artist that Namiki hired. Among Pilot pens, I really enjoy writing with my MUSIC nib and my Falcon Nib on my inexpensive Pilot 912.
First of all I have to say that I have no “high end” fountain pens.
I don’t mind to spend a good amount of money on watches but when it comes to fountain pens I don’t get to pull the trigger. I show you in the picture some of my favorites.

Patrick, do you use your maki-e pens on a frequent basis and does it have an impact on the artwork or does the urushi protect it?
I have a Yukari Royale in red urushi but I keep looking out for a maki-e design that appeals to me.

A less qualified answer...
I personally don't use my Urushi pens on a daily basis. But I do know those who do. I can tell you, the absolutely most critical thing is keeping the pen in a drawer and not in sunlight. For instance, I have a friend with two identical urushi lacquer pilot pens. One is in Bold nib, and one is in Fine nib. This is the only difference. He mainly uses the Fine nib and this pen sits out on his desk. The desk is not against a window, but over the years, the ambient light, regular use scratches, and some sunlight has shown significant amounts of light wear on the piece that the other pen seldom sees. So I don't personally have the same experience, and all of my urushi pens are stored in a drawer and away from light for this very reason. It's also best to use the pens in some humidity too. So dry air does dry out the urushi. I've also seen dropped urushi pens that have been damaged, but the damage is fixable through the kintsugi urushi repair method.
