Chopard

A nice and perhaps, surprisingly large collection

 By: Tim_M : December 9th, 2017-19:23
For me, the steel and platinum standard Time Traveler are the winners. The black and orange highlight combo is striking and inventive, and it reminds me of the old LUC Pro One GMT.

Respecting the platinum model, I deeply appreciate that Chopard chose a distinct and nuanced dull slate blue rather than a voguish and pandering bright blue like so many others of the moment. While I like blue on watches, imagination and invention still count immensely toward's a design's success. Otherwise, the Singapore edition is quite nice its own right... yes, I break down in the end and endorse another blue watch ;-)

More to come

Tim_M,

Don'tbe surprised by the variants. Although it is now trendy to produce multivariant editions, Chopard has always been about client choice and customisation, within the confines of good taste. They have the artisans to decorate to clients' wishes. We saw one of these commissions HERE in Beijing.

The world timer complication allows scope for variants based on owners' prefered city. There might not be many pieces for S. Georgia.

Your choice of the standard models is logical as Chopard must have had a protracted Think to settle on those design colour motifs.
They must appeal to the majority of f viewers.

The unique blue dial on the standard Pt model did seem "strange" when we first saw it. I guess we had been primed by other brands to expect a common type of blue for platinum watches so the 'aegean blue' surprised us.

Of course, the blue on the Beijing and Singapore editions aren't too bad.... wink

Regards,
MTF

Thanks for the most interesting post and lovely GMT’s.

Also for the history of time zones - interesting how politics then, and still, bends the realities.
Cheers,
Giles.

Don't talk about the war.....

 By: MTF : December 10th, 2017-04:06
Indeed, despite French being the "diplomatic language", we've had a bit of bother in the past.
As Basil Fawlty said: "Don't mention the War!"

Although Fleming envisioned timezones of 15 degrees longitude, the wiggly lines that we see on the globe denoting time zones shows geopolitics and country borders still outweigh science.

MTF

Yep - time is relative on a number of fronts ;-) [nt]

If they make a Hong Kong edition....

 By: MTF : December 10th, 2017-04:10
...the GMT+8 time zone will have many variants: HKG, BEI, SIN.....
But those are the Big-3 for watch collecting in that time zone.
Also Macau for sales......

....by actually owning one and using it. smile

Tell us about the real world usage later.

What works or not?

Is the date useful for crossing date lines?

Power reserve adequate?

Bravo!

Ok, back from a place with...

 By: S F : December 15th, 2017-22:40
a 30 min timezone so my LUC TT1 did not work😂. For pple who locate in or travel a lot to 30 or 45 min zones, need to look elsewhere.

With an automatic movement, the 60 hr PR is more than adequate if you are on the move most of the time. I did not wind for 3 days, no issue.

I don’t pay much attention to the date on any of my watches (incld the TT1) when travelling as it follows the hometime so I guess the date function is not of much use when one crosses the date line. Am heading out for vacation somewhere 5 hours ahead and I will be having the TT1 on again. A watch is just a tool, I will make it work for me the way I need it to 🤣🤣.

Cheers!

The countries that have part-hour time zones are very trying

 By: MTF : December 16th, 2017-07:40
Indeed, the countries with part-hour time zones are trying to prove something geopolitically as a protest.
Venezuela is a prime example of a dictator gone mad.

It's not difficult to just choose one hour either way.
Some countries have even selected a single time zone when they span two time zones e.g. Malaysia.
Singapore chose to be the same as Beijing and Hong Kong for business hours and stock exchange reasons when physically it is an hour earlier.
Larger countries may need three time zones but we are usd to that as long as it is whole hour increments.

Thanks for your field report.

Thanks for this "Catalogue Raisonné"

It is really "empowering" collectors (as per mission statement of the forum) to have variants presented of a model so well documented by an insider. Though, I had to find out that "in metal" the watches can make a completely different impression than on photos. When I went to the Chopard Boutique in Geneva to see this world timer, I was most interested in the steel version. I liked the orange accents making the visuals a bit youthful, and the legibility. The very helpful boutique manageress offered to organize within an hour a platinum version from the factory to show the other "white metal" version. And what revelation it was, like a completely different watch. The photos could never communicate the subtle play of the dial's colours.

Very true

Our mobile phones and cameras can only reproduce in 2D whatever the preset colour balance.

We also have no smell-o-vision so a real life viewing is best.

However, many readers live hundreds and thousands of miles from the boutiques so our fora are the next best thing.

DaveG,

Thanks for the user feedback.
If it's a year, you must have been an early adopter as it was launched end-October 2016.

I am generally a fan of the steel editions, the regular one as well as the Moscow one and the Singapore one. If I was to choose I may just go for Moscow. A great world timer for sure!

I changed my mind about the orange one

 By: MTF : December 17th, 2017-03:16
KMII

At launch, I was drawn immediately to the standard steel version with black and orange dial because it was so striking and legible.
So different from the usual colours of the L.U.C collection. Some people reminded us of the original L.U.C Pro One that was the last time orange appeared.
Later and after consultation with the current Mrs MTF, the orange started to be a little scary smile
It may be too 'loud'...?
The best dial for legibility is on the standard rose gold variant but gold is expensive.
I have also stopped regular travel like I used to in the past. [sigh]

MTF
