It was not a surprise for some of them, such as this Memovox E 855 Blue Scale, even if very highly priced, but the rarity might have justified the price...
But for some of them, I still wonder how the did that.
For example, the Geophysic had a dial which was not in top condition, and it is possible to find a pristine one for way much less.
Same for the Geomatic, with a so so dial.
As for the Polaris, for half of the price, you can find a nicer one.
But the champion is the Shark.
The Market has some mysterious ways, sometimes...

Your observations are very interesting, Nicolas. Agreed, the vintage watch market — the inclinations of buyers — is intriguing to ponder. In any event, that watch with the box certainly looks appealing!
That one, as I said, is apart. There are not so many for sale, it is hard to say how much it is worth it. But still...

who knows if a real collector actually paid for it or if it just went back in a Richemont drawer...
Exactly! It would have been an embarrassment if those pieces stayed unsold for a year or more ...
I don't think they are back to Richemont. Maybe there were not sold for that price, after all.
Hmmm ... I certainly know that when richemont releases "online only" editions they always "sell out" within days.
But then reappear at dealers months later. The latest release attempted to elevate and draw attention to the vintage market, it was not about making money from just a few pieces. They had to pretend that there was demand at the highly elevated prices. There is some chance that they did sell - look at auction world where people often overpay for easy to find pieces because there is an auction house name attached to them. But otherwise I do think that Richemont probably just put away the unsold pieces ...
They went quickly!
Yes the prices were a bit ambitious in some cases, but they have impeachable provenance - as they were bought directly from JLC. I'm also guessing that there'll be a guarantee & also suspect the prospect of no nasty surprises also appealled.

I find the approach of directing attention to vintage very relevant with so many beautiful pieces in this category ! We just have to find them on our own .... at the right price ...
Perhaps buying it from the JLC albeit at higher than the market price gives a sense of trust and security ?
I feel that with this Jaeger-LeCoultre initiative, the market's invisible hand has put its white glove on so we buyers don't get strange ideas about prices.

Where are the new ideas and pieces ?!
We all know the history and we enjoy it already.
We demand new stuff !
