Horological Meandering

Hi everybody,

I have purchased 3 months ago a 5167A Aquanaut Patek and I am very happy about it...  but I have decided that my wife should receive a mechanical watch as well...   but...  unfortunately my budget after this big buy is quite limited...  Please do help me to decide which watch would be appropriate.   It has to be mechanical, as I don't like Quartz at all!!!   I was thinking of the Zenith's ultra thin moonphase in SS, with its Elite movement, any comments???  Thank you all.

It's known in the business that men will often buy mechanical watches for their wives, only to come exchange it for a quartz model soon after because his wife didn't want to deal with winding and setting the thing.

... to wind the watch for her. I've wound my wife's watch every morning for years. If it ever stops she'll probably think the battery is dead ... but unfortunately it might be me.

. . . that's not going away anytime soon, and will be serviceable long into the future.  A true manufacture movement, no less than your Patek. 

Another choice would be Omega's Constellation . . .

. . . seen here in steel with a diamond bezel and gold accents.  The cal 8520 was developed for ladies watches, and as technically proficient as the movements intended for their masculine counterparts.

I actually thought of Omega co-axial myself...  excellent alternative... but what your opinion on the Ultrathin Moonphase???

. . . and a bit more old-fashioned, which can be a positive, depending on the preferences of Mrs Ofer.  She would be happy with either, but I suspect you would be a bit more satisfied presenting her a watch with the latest in technical advances. 

The manufacturer that produces the most elegant ladies watches, in my humble opinion, is Piaget, and their movements are also designed and manufactured in house, as are Zenith's.

...on what sort of regular day the lady would have. The Zenith you mentioned is a great piece and is something that I would think is comparable to all the other great manufactures. It probably won't be able to take a beating for a daily use watch though as it does attract scratches and nicks and dents show up fairly easily on the nicely polished case. My wife for example doesn't take her watch off throughout the day just so that it doesn't stop running (yes, they do think those things sometimes), and for her, the Omega Aqua Terra with the 8500 calibre does it's job really well.  A robust and tough watch with a great movement to go with.

.. but it is your wife who will be wearing it, right?  What would she like, do you think?  I have a friend who has tons of high-end watches but his wife has no interest and despite he has many lady's watches, she doesn't wear - maybe once in a few years....  So, just to show what is out there, not that I recommend or anything, here is one popular example out there.....  PP and Hublot, may not be a good match, but it will be up to your wife...

Thank  you so much everybody...   for the time being...  lots of options...

And a beauty it is -- as well as serving well for both daytime and evening wear with its two sides.

The only thing that she doesn't like is having to wind it -- so her daily wearer is a ladies' Blancpain, which has a splendid reduced size version of the X-71 bracelet, an attractive SS case, and a small row of diamonds around the bezel for good measure.  She wears that piece most of the time -- and loves that it is both self-winding and keeps excellent time.

classic pilot for the ladies!

A lot of ladies like the JLC Reverso line as it can be both classy and stylish at the same time.

I am refering to the latest version in stainless steel.  I won't know it is the best lady mechanical watch.  But it is certainly one of the most beautiful lady mechanical watches to me. Further, it is very reasonably priced.  Unfortunately, it is for lady with big wrist.

Very reasonable price, robust ETA movement, elegantly thin, read Mike's review of the gentleman's version of this watch...  

I had a chance to buy it for her. Usually she doesn't want to spend money or get things for herself.
But with a birthday coming up in a few weeks ... she found this in the "vintage watches" case all by herself,
and after trying it on, insisted she have it.

It will complement her Reverso from last Christmas (and my Grand GMT):

 So now we are a 3-Reverso family
