Sunday Watch

Dear purists,

Ive been lucky enough to own a complicated patek for five years now. I've been wearing it and treasuring it every day. However for a while i've been playing with the idea of buying another watch for myself. I've termed it the 'sunday watch', a watch that you can wear on a your day off, on your holiday, on the beach, a watch that is less delicate than a patek but still carries as many purist features as possible. I've looked at rolex explorers, omegas, breitlings, fiftty fathoms but i wanted something that felt a bit more classic and less frequently seen on wrists. My ideal watch would have manual winding, size less than 40mm, time +/- chrono, no date/calendar, and an in-house movement. There is a number of such watches out there but they tend to be dress watches and dont fit the 'sunday watch' feel, for example vacheron patrimony, jlc ultra thin, patek calatrava. The closest casual looking watch meeting those criteria that i could find is the nomos club. I wonder if people here have any other ideas or any views on the nomos. I know its not a brand commonly talked about in here. I'd also like to hear if other people own watches that they use as 'sunday watches' and what those may be.

I have to admit that I like the design of this watch, the matte stealth black ceramic bezel with the brushed SS that looks like titanium is beautiful stealthy luxury.

However, it costs less than rolex submariner C and while lower cost is of value for products reviewed by Consumer Reports, it is somewhat of a double edged sword in the world of horology where financial accessibility runs counter to status and exclusivity.

The JLC NSA is of absolutely no interest to the hedge funders playing Navy Seals make believe with paintball guns on the beach in southampton, and, while a real life navy seal could easily afford this watch, (soldiers, especially elite soldiers, make ALOT more money than taxpayers think), they prefer the bulletproof functionality of the gshock.

Unfortunately, the unwashed masses have caught the royal oak craze (e.g. I once saw someone not on any forbes 400 list wearing AP's ROO Diver for scuba diving), making your selection criteria of a sunday watch not seen on every 1 percenter's wrist a bit more difficult.

Frankly, there is only one sunday watch that simultaneously broadcasts your financial clout and your appreciation for haute horological engineering and that is a richard mille.

The older version is 38 mm and the current one 40 mm. The watch is accurate, 100 m waterproof and the dial is really nice. I don't get bored with the dial and the watch is very accurate. You don't often see these...

the Nomos' are great watches

they are small and discreet with in house calibres, easy to wear and hardly ever seen on anyone who isnt already a knowledgeable watchbuyer, but i would be looking towards something a bit more rugged and waterproof for holidays, sundays, messing with the kids etc. the Club is the more rugged and sporty of the Nomos range so may well be the right watch for you.

off hand i cant think of anything else that is perfect for your purposes as there are so many.

although I do not own the Club, which is sportier, the Nomos Tangente Sport Datum that I do own has 10 ATM water resistance and is a great all around watch. I have put this watch on a bracelet and swum in a pool with it. It also is the dressiest watch I own and I can wear it with a suit. The timekeeping is excellent. There are many good choices out there and with your Patek, you could probably go a for a sportier look.

I have the Tangomat with same movement (as in the Club Automatic). A lot of watch for the money. If you can wear a little larger, for me the go-to weeked watch by now is the MIH watch, somewhat bigger at 42mm and with a 7750 base but very "Purist", with 100m WR and the rubber strap quite beach-worthy.

It's a watch to fit many straps to, NATO's, leather ... .

And you'll only see them on Purists wrists

The LLD is the most enjoyable watch for a weekend.

It's a "no worries" watch that, at the same time, is very hard to find on other people wrists.

I wear a Nomos Sport when I'm not wearing vintage, and am more than satisfied with it. Accurate, super stealth, simple... No hesitation recommending Nomos.

I always liked this Franck Muller Endurance 24 of the 90's, but it was for me too small.

I can wear any watches on Sunday, it depends what I have to do on the day.

Otherwise to me a Sunday watch would be about time, travel, easiness, comfort and pleasure (almost like any other day).
If it is a 'pantouflard' (1 ) Sunday, I would wear something with plenty time stories and some fun, or nothing but studying or fantasising a plan my next one.

(1) A stay-home Sunday wearing carpet slippers ;-)

I tried to out-thunk myself and find a casual weekend watch in the vein of the Patek that Mihalis currently wears, but the Speedy Pro is the watch that I usually recommend to people after a classic, versatile watch with history and credibility. It is an excellent suggestion in any company.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph....great looking, sporty, tough, lot more exclusive than a Rolex, slimmer than the JLC Navy Seals, smaller than the Blancpain fifty fathoms, it's 40mm so near size you are looking for, in house movement, chronograph, has a date, but no day/month, so ticks most of your boxes.

Other Suggestion is Patek Nautilus Chronograph..also ticks most of the things you are looking for..

I've never seen another one... in the wild, or in any shops... and given that they're no longer made, I don't foresee that happening.

Dear Mihalis,

I have been familiar with the concept of the Sunday watch for some time. I would have to say that the eligibility criteria would have to include a certain level of pedigree which the Nomos does not achieve. My choices would be the A Lange & Sohne Anniversary Langematik or the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 50th anniversary.

I look forward to continued debate on this subject and any news of your acquisition of an appropriate Sunday watch.
