In my perception, every watch collector should have a Panerai, its fun, its shape/design and wide thick straps makes it comfortable on the wrist.
Having said that, I'd always go with the "simple" 44 models, manual wind as the large crown and min of 2 days PR, makes it easy to operate (unlike speed master for example).
I'll also go with Marina (seconds display) models to have a moving element.
All of the above makes it easier for me to explain why I like the 111 and its cousins, and as more advanced collector a similar 47mm like the 127.
And having said all that, and owning more than one Panerai in all models, sizes, looks... I'd say that the 233 is a great watch on the wrist.
From the moment you strap it on you'll feel a joy and smile while looking at it. Thats enough to get it.
Yes, it has its flaws, 1st is the in-house movement, 2nd is some unnecessary elements on the dial, but they are not that bad to avoid the watch.
Make sure the watch you buy is perfect, if serviced that it was don't properly at the factory with fully documented computerized receipt (don't touch anything "my watchmaker serviced it")..
good luck
