Which Nautilus do you prefer 5711 or 5712....

I love my 5712 and would definitely pick again over the 5711

Nice!

I like the 5711 for its simplicity, and its allegiance to the original model that debuted in 1972.

However, the 5712 does speak to me as well; although I don't like the overall idea of the moonphase, date, power reserve, and small seconds (I think this is a strange combination); I do find the overall layout very readable and very beautiful. Furthermore, the beautiful caliber 240 movement makes the 5712 even more enticing.

I couldn't tell you which one to choose, but I think I'm currently leaning slightly more towards the 5712 even though that I don't like the philosophical idea about the display on the watch. But I'm a caliber 240 lover.

However, one cannot possibly go wrong with the 5711. Personally, I'd consider acquiring both of them.

I agree with you in most of the points.

To get them both would be heaven & hell for me, as there are just too many interesting watches out there
and I don´t want to stock safe queens. Tough decisions are part of the fun, aren´t they

I have the 5712G and it's a great watch. I also wanted simple and got an Aquanaut 5167.

I like the 5711/1 the best in pictures and may still get one one day, I had the chance to see and try on a 5712/1 and it  hit me that the asymetrical dial is MAGICAL!!, Its had me captivated for 27 hrs, lol. The way the light shimmers off the dial and sub dials is something I wasn't expecting.

I love the asymmetric layout of the complications. For me it is not pretty but it is interesting and I have not tired of it!

I tried the 5711 last week and it's a very nice watch but, too clean for me. I need those little red dots of the power reserve indicator, the moon and the stars to brighten up the dark nights.   Love the dial distribution.

I'll be the odd one and express my preference for the simplicity of the 5711.  I agree that the 5712 has its points but I find the complications to be not particularly useful to me personally.  I just find the cleaner dial and simplicity to the 5711 to be more attractive... not to mention that there is a healthy price difference.

But you can't go wrong with either.

I had the opportunity to purchase either the 5711 or 5712, both in SS.  Although I appreciate the complications of the 5712, I found that the simplicity of the 5711 made for a more elegant "sports" watch.  To me, the asymmetrical dials interrupt the harmony of the steel bracelet and the case; furthermore, the cushion dial of the 5711 shimmers in the light, whereas that of the 5712 is mostly obscured by the subdials.  I may be in the minority here, but I do believe that the distinction between these two watches proves the old adage that sometimes less is more.  Fear not, however; you cannot go wrong with whichever one you choose.  Good luck!

The 5712--I've had it on a number of times--is more engaging and lively, though I find the simplicity of the 5711 to be soothing. 

While trying on both, I asked my wife her opinion.  She suggested it would be bold to wear the 5711 and consider it enough.  Sometimes, she truly stretches my mind.

That is the most desirable Nautilus IMHO, in regard to aesthetics, movement, and function.  And with prices relatively depressed at the moment, it may also be the best value.  240 movement of the 5712 is certainly nice, but not much to brag about, especially if you have seen Lange's small rotor auto movement.

Personally, I find the 5711 to be a little too 'austere' for a Nautilus, which is a dressy and sporty watch at the same time. Some may feel that a style and shape like the Nautilus is a statement in itself and enough to carry the trademark guilloche dial without any complications. I would think that if I wanted a simple Patek, I'd probably go to the Calatrava or Gondolo ranges for something. But if I should choose a Nautilus, then imho, either 5712 or 5980 would better match the Nautilus 'spirit'.

They didn't have moons on the 1st jumbo.

I didn't mean to debase the original design of the Nautilus when I said 'spirit', I meant it as how I perceive the watch as it looks and the impressions that it embodies today, ie in direct comparison if the 5711 and 5712.

I'm not sure if its just me but every 240 movement watch I've ever owned did not wind well on the wrist. I just started to think of them as manual winders, not that I mind because its a pleasure to wind but that my small complaint for the day

To warn of the need for winding!  I've heard others say the same thing about the efficiency of the power reserve.

by a narrow margin and ONLY because it is unique in its presentation of the different complications. In comparison with other time only watch with steel bracelet, 5711 is almost the acme, at least looks-wise.

I just picked up the 5711 last Friday... love it!
I was considering the 5711, 5712, and 5980 but decided to go with the simple dial...

Funny I just saw this thread I have been debating this in my head for a week. I love the simplicity of the 5711, but the 5980 is what grabs me, The 5712 dial is too buys IMO.
