A few observations
1. You love your 5970Rg
2. You are ambivalent about the platinum model
3. You feel that the plat model is possibly more deirable than the rg but
4. you would either have to break your one model rule or
5.sell some of your watches. Both of which is less than desirable..
Why the rush to buy the plat. I suspect that they will always be available for a few dollar more or less than retail Look at the yellow gold and Rg model , bith available on the net in "plentiful" supply.
Not sure what I would do in your situation but I would sure like to have your problems!! LOL
Listen to your heart. You have built up a spectacular collection up to now. Trust your taste

".....I have found that this rule has helped me put together a varied, colourful collection....So what to do??? "
You break your rule Miles.
I can promise you, there won't be any crying about the presence of an extra 5970 in the patchwork of your collection in a few years time.
Conversely, you can provide the name and number to your AD.
If you have the 5970R and think this is the best looking 5970, keep the 5970R ! If you need to sell other watches before you can buy the 5970P it depends on how much you like those others.
If money isn't a problem and you could buy it without any problem , you can go for it . But when you have to sacrifce other watches you like ... don't do it
Dear Miles
If you don't buy it, you will have another dilemma:
Which one of your sons - you seem to have more than one - gets the 5970R?? If you have two sons, each of them will get a 5970, if you bought the 5970P. Then, they will have to decide on the metal only ...
If you can afford it, buy it.
Best regards

Hello Miles,
I agree with Bruno's advise. If you have to sell one to buy this, then think twice before making any move. I see we both agree the 5970R is our holy grail of PP collections. In that case, the 5970P would really have to stir my blood before I would plunk down the large change for the P version. But then again, if it's something that stirs your blood, then I would say go for it. This is one gorgeous PP that will become a centerpiece in your (or anyone's) collection. So, go with your heart and instinct, and enjoy your collection. Best wishes to you
Cheers,
Frederick
Miles, unless you can afford both the 5970R and 5970P, I wouldn't
give up a watch that I love for one that might be a bit more collectible.
If you could afford both, then by all means buy both. I think all watches
of the 5970 series will be collectible.
I remember walking into the Wynn Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas just after it opened
They had a 5970R in the showcase. I tried it on, and I knew that I wanted
to buy one. When I got home, I put in my order with my favorite Patek AD,
and in June 2006, I had a 5970R. For me, the silver or white dial is more
preferable to a black dial, so even though I hope to someday own a 5970J
and then a P, I wouldn't sell either my R, G for a J or P.
Good Luck with your decision. I am sure your heart will guide you.
Best Regards,
Bob Lembkey

Hi Miles,
First off, I can see what a struggle this is for you and I empathize with your plight. I feel that there have been many good suggestions made in this thread and it seems they have been helpful for you.
I have often tried to make myself stick to some rules in various matters in my life and sometimes I find that while those rules served me well when they were initially crafted, times and circumstances change and it periodically made sense for me to reconsider whether or not I should continue to stick to those rules. Sometimes the answer was yes and sometimes the answer was no.
For me, I try not to make a final decision until I see the watch on my wrist as there is no substitute for that view. I suspect if you were to obtain the 5970 P now, you would probably be able to recoup most or all of the purchase price if you opted to sell it soon after your purchase, but you may not be able to buy another new one from your AD in the future. As I understand it, the 5970 P will have the lowest production numbers of all the 5970 models.
I don't know what your financial circumstances are, but if you could afford to buy the 5970 P AND keep the 5970 R as well, then you could decide at your leisure what changes you would make in your collection after you have had a chance to reflect on the decision for an extended time.
Just my .02. My hope for you is that you will look back without significant regret on whatever choice you make. Best of luck!
Cheers!
