5004 is a league of its own. While one can discuss about 3970/5970 a 5004 is in a different orbit 
I've seen the 3970 decades ago and fell in love immediately but......
....could not even imagine how people can spend such an amount of money on a watch. It was at the time my passion for watches began to grow. In 2015 I sold a bunch of watches and bought exactly this rosegold 3970 I've seen so many years before. Behind the 2499 the 3970 is in my opinion the most beautiful watch on this planet and it is still underrated

Perhaps just semantics, but I wouldn’t describe it as “underrated”. But definitely “undervalued”. Arguably every bit as good as 5970, but much less expensive.
3970 vs 5970
Personally, I never quite understood why many people could prefer a 5970 over a 3970.... The dial of the 5970 might feel a bit „bloated“ if compared to the 3970. It might feel a bit like they tried hard to enlarge it beyond its natural proportions (which they did, kind of, of course). Also, the smaller case visually concentrates the mechanics and the beautiful dial in case of 3970.
Furthermore, 3970 was the original. 5970 just a later facelift.
If you don‘t need a larger case because of massive wrists the 3970 seems the better choice to me...
P.S.: a 3970p with black stick dial (total should be less than 150 pieces) is also about 5x as rare as a 5970p (total close to 800 pieces)...

You make a very strong and detailed argument in favor of why 3970 might be a better choice in the 3970 vs. 5970 debate.

Isn't it finally a matter of taste and in this case wristsize?
For my 17,5cm wrist the 3970 is perfect. But with 20cm and more this watch might not really be the best choice.

Thanks for the beautiful images! Black on rose is really striking. I was very surprised when Patek released this model. Often black on RG or YG in
a grand complication plus Patek bracelet, is reserved for “unique” pieces for special clients. (Of course they also did this with 5204 RG).
Each of your 5270s are for me totally different in character - like 3 different references! Congratulation on owning this spectacular trio!

I love the 2499, 5004, 3970, 5970. However, the 3970 was the first I purchsed and has always been special to me. Love the pump pushers and the simplicity. I like the vintage look and feel, and the size is just perfect for a dressier watch.
