no opinion about the future value.

Why?

1/ Because I always found the positioning of the date counters just perfect

2/ it is an annual calendar (more useful than a chrono IMHO)

3/ it is a dressed watch but can be wear in less casual moments

If I were you, I would choose the blue dial instead of the black one (more austere but it is my opinion)

Regarding the value, I do not know

I would go to on the Patek 5905P-010 why i like of the complication of the annual calendar and 

If you really like platinum , go for it.

Annual calendar, can be dressed up or down and the blue dial is beautiful.

But I personally like the 5170 more because of the movement and manual wind, as well as the aesthetic of breguet numerals and leaf hands. I certainly appreciate the argument for the AC but this 5170 is just my preference. Good luck.

About value,I don't think both will make a huge loss nor a great investment.So but what you love more.

The manual chrono movement is just gorgeous and the thinner case feels more comfortable on the wrist to me than the 5905.

as was in that same exact case a few months ago!
I wanted to buy my first "new Patek" as all my watches were vintage.
They were vintage because I find most of the new ones too big.
I love the 5110s better than the new WTs.
I love the 3800s as much as the new Nautiluses.
I love the 5066 better than the new Aquanauts.

The point is I wanted a black dial, on grey gold or platinum, to complete my collection, because, all brands together, I had not this combo.
And I wanted a chrono.

I was hesitating between the exact same two watches !!!

I will not talk about how beautiful both are, because they are.
But the 5170g was my first choice because it seems smaller, and the manual chronograph is so cooooooooool!
And I loved the 5905p on paper, because AC + Chrono + Platinum (love the diamond) but I was pretty sure the 42mm will not fit my wrist.
And then I tried on both.

And here's the thing : the 5170 looked much bigger on my wrist than the 5905 !

So this was an obvious and very quick choice : I bought the 5905p this same day.
I regret the 5170 movement because it is gorgeous but hope to offer me a 3970 one day...

Regarding the dial, I don't really like this blue dial and love this black one. But this is really personal. They sold much more blue dials than black ones in the Geneva Salon.

I got my 5905p after 2 months and it is always a great pleasure to wear it.

I think you will not hesitate on the big day, one or the other will suits you the best and you'll be a happy man

The 5170 case leaves me a little bit cold, and i would much prefer the 5905P.

The 5170 case is a little too thin, and does not have the heft of the P.

JC, nice post thanks and the 5905 looks extra good on you! It's a real dilemma for me, obviously I like both, I feel that right now the trend favors 5905 i.e. bigger and sportier watch, both are classical and will never go out of style. I wish I could get both.

I think that if you want a PP chrono it has to be a manual movement IMO.

I asked to try with a folding clasp, and it makes the watch even thicker. That's the reason I think.

Despite the above, I think you should buy what you love. As far as "investment value" of a regular production modern Patek, I think you should consider your purchase an "investment" in your happiness - no more, no less. They are helpful. I have talked to a lot of Patek owners and "watch enthusiasts" (whatever that means) and I receive the following consistently: 5905P: - AC, sportiness, more in-trend style today 5170G: - Manual chronograph movement is always special and the Patek 29-535PS movement is extra special. It was the first in-house built one and the 5170 (white faced) was the first reference to feature this movement-this was cited as "significant" by many - Size is more like those of traditional Pateks, inferring style longevity Both: - Platinum vs white gold purely a personal preference, many of the Pateks that were sold for very high prices in recent auctions were gold, not platinum I am 41, so I feel that the 5905 looks younger but I wear suit and tie to work and feel that the 5170 is dressier. What a dilemma! Here a picture of the blue dial 5905 on my skinny wrist.

I believe the 5905P looks a tad big on your wrist that will make the 5960P looks perfect.You will get an added power reserve,12 hours chrono counter and a folding clasp as well.

I like the look of the 5960, I think it is no longer in production (5905 was released to replace the 5960 I believe) so will have to get pre-owned. I always think that somehow I would get my first Patek new with my name on the certificate, as a finance person I know that thinking is a bit stupid and it makes so much more economic sense to get pre-owned with some of the depreciation done away. I have a Rolex Daytona (steel black dial), which is 40mm and that size seems to work fine, so I was leaning towards Ref 5170 (39.4mm) but your 5960P is a great recommendation-one more for me to think about!

You should find a new,sealed 5960P with open papers,I don't believe it's a hard task.should be quite easy.

Grey and blue dialed are easier actually than black as black was produced for a shorter period.

quite a bit and have not been able to find any 5960-016 with open papers. I found 7 of them so far, spread all over the world, but mostly in "mint" condition. PM me if you have any ideas. I have tried both 5960-016 and 5905 black on and for my wrist I like the 5960 a lot better.

.....5070 is an icon for Patek. You could find a 5070G.....

My AD has a few 5170G in stock not moving for over a year. The demand for it is just not there. 5070 would be the better choice if you don't mind used.
In regards to 5905P, I almost bought this watch but changed my mind when I tried it in metal. The profile is way too thick for my taste and when I tried it, the watch kept sticking out of my shirt cuff. Standing up, it made the sleeve of my watch arm hang. 5170G is more sleek (yet discreet, snugly going under the cuff). As you said, 5170 would be the better choice for a suit. Value/ investment wise the 5905P might hold its value better because of rarity (platinum) and higher demand from the younger clientele.
PS. IMHO the 5905 looks a bit too big for your wrist and you may have a bigger problem with your cuff than me. I have an 8" wrist.

I think 5905 is too big for me as well so I was leaning towards 5170. Any chance of PM 'ing me your AD? Not sure if there's such a thing as "typical" or "average" discount for new Patek, obviously depends on the reference etc,

They're the only Patek authorized dealer here in Indonesia. It's a pretty big chain with shops in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.

I thought Sotheby's and Christie's auction results are open to public anyway. I've seen results being discussed openly here. How the watch will hold its value was his question.
I also see other forum brands in puristpro talk about prices openly. Is this only taboo for Patek's forum or the rule applies to all brands?
