Contemplating a Dato Up and Down
Hi All: Been reading with interest about this watch of late. Lovely piece. Was hoping i could solicit your advice. I was all set to pull the trigger on a PP5960r black dial and then the dato came along. I current own a 5070g and a VC drivers as part of my "dress" rotation. Even contemplated moving the 5070 and consolidating my collection with a PP5270g. As you can see, i am all over the place. The pains and pangs of the passion i guess. Nonetheless, any advice, opinions and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes sir, thank you. I feel the size of the new data suits me better and i prefer the "cleaner" dial. Looks like the poor man's DS! 
I prefer the up/down Dato by far over the original
and while the 5070 is a true collectors item, I would not fear parting with it, as it is always available and has not risen that much in value over the last 7-8 years... (not much, I say, but somewhat-- actually less than you would expect) , so don't fret too much... get what ignites your interest and passion... the new Dato is fantastic!
While the original Dato may be the "must have"...
... I find the new Dato U/D is a bit larger diameter and therefore a bit better balanced (distribution of the weight), thus easier for your wrist.... Having had three Datos in the past, just my 2 cents....

I agree with Nicholas. The PP 5070 is an icon, far more
charming than the PP's new 5170, and the original Dato is more of an icon than the Up/Down. Sometimes you cannot improve upon perfection.
Love your VC 1921. One of the finest tie only watches in the world. I have a Traditionelle which shares the same movement as your 1921.

As you've said, you are all over the place...
... so if i were you, i wouldn't do anything, before really knowing what i want.
The 5070 is the kind of watch that you love more and more as you wear it. If you don't, then it might better go leaving place for something else.
About the Dato, i find the new up/down misbalanced, the area between '10' and '2' feels empty, while the original had the roman numbers that are very nice.
Plus keep in mind that black dials are special in a way that they are for black dial lovers, meaning if you are not, you might get bored of it with time.

Hold on to the 5070, I have to agree with that advice. But the Dato is a really special piece, one never tires of looking at the breathtaking movement. There has been plenty of debate on this and other forums about the question of the original Dato vs. the second generation version; my view is that you can't go wrong either way. I have the original, and though I would appreciate a longer power reserve, I really prefer the esthetics of the original dial. I like the romans (even if they are unusual for a chrono) and I agree that there is too much "open space" in the top part of the dial of the new version. Note that is not apparent when the hands are at 2:00 as in most photos. Finally, the size of the original is better for my relatively small wrist. Lots of people prefer the new version, however, and I can understand and respect that. Either way and you will be adding a spectacular piece to your collection.

The Dato is on a different level vs the 5960 IMHO
So I'm unsure how you can even compare the two. The Dato is I think one of the best if not the best chronos around, again IMHO. Old Dato or new, entirely up to you but I like the new one more. Try activating the chrono in both and see what you think
Dato is poor mans ds??? Really?? In that case you better get the ds. That's the king so to speak.
Would you also think that 5270 is poor mans 5004????
If so you better off getting 5004!

My reference to the poor man's DS was simply an aesthetic reference with the poor man being me! LOL!
Dato is the better watch of the two
Although 5960p still has the upper hand when it comes to second hand value.
