. . . so finding the answer directly will prove difficult.  My guess is the opposite, Graham, as the wording makes more sense coming from Crichton, who was not only the author of the novel but also the director and scriptwriter of the film.  Given his professional involvement, the watches would've been a legitimate tax deduction for him, so buying a few or even several would've cost him essentially nothing within the context of his annual income when he filed his taxes for that year.
