IMO you may have misread the numbers... 3944 is the ref#, not the 6 digit number...
The 6 digit number is the case serial#
Usually these numbers are 8 digit but it is not uncommon to find original pieces with 6 digit serial numbers, especially in gold cases!
I have seen several of them over the years, and I must go through my collection - if I recall correctly I have a Conny with a 6 digit case serial#...
I do not know the reason why they also used these shorter numbers though.
