watch to start them off to see if they like the idea dont want to pay a fortune
for reference books and often dont know we are here. of course googling will
probably find us, but do people seriously go to all that touble when starting

I have made the same experience... Sometimes the watches are presented so badly and when you run a risk and buy (even with poor pictures in the description) it may turn out perfectly... I had luck several times when running a risk, but I have also "burnt"...
