He wasn't a pilot (or co-pilot), and I don't think he was a navigator or bombardier, either. That leaves gunner positions . . .

He was stationed in East Africa towards the end of the war, but came down with a tropical disease and shipped back to England to recover. Why the RAF would have Lancasters stationed in Africa towards war's end is a bit of a mystery, unless they were protecting British colonial interests. At any rate, being a member of the RAF was a point of immense pride, which was all the more remarkable as he was an unassuming kinda guy.
