I don't know if this is still the case, but in 2010 it was actually illegal for a store to ask for a drivers license in the state of California. Today, when I buy an expensive item at a department store in California, I still don't show my drivers license, nor am I asked to. So, when I go into an Omega boutique in California, I do not expect to be asked for my drivers license. Stores and store employees used to do this to protect consumers and to match the name on the credit card. But in 2010, the law changed, and retailers could only compare the signature on the back of the card with the signed receipt.
