. . . there really are no simple answers due to the multitude of Speedmaster iterations. And then there's the question of intrinsic value.
As much as I'd like to say your friend could go to an authorized dealer (or Omega boutique), specify what he wants and buy it with ease, he'll also have to accept a fairly steep drop in asset value when he walks out the door.
On the other hand, if he searches for, say, a '74 ref 145.022, he'll end up spending pretty much the same amount but retain all its inherent value. Of course, there is a trade-off in new-vs-used condition and warranty coverage, but if he knows a trustworthy watchmaker, then I'd be tempted to go the vintage route.
