Sergio has the best approach. Start with a base 000 or 005 or 111
Fall in love with the brand then add to your stable. This will give you a chance to really know what you want. You will also have the reflection of others around. To me the base model are like a basic Rolex submariner.
You cant go wrong this way.

I only have one Panerai, but it's a tritium destro. It's unique because of those two characteristics. If you want a base model, all you need to do is pick between sandwich or sausage dial, lefty or righty, Luminor or Radiomir, Good luck.

Thank you all for the much appreciated input. I had a quick look at some models at a dealer and think I have a preference for the slightly more vintage dial look, so guess it will be 422 (or 372 when it comes with sapphire glass) or the 590.
