New Watch on the Wrist

Sep 20, 2020,04:56 AM

Earlier this summer I saw this Panerai 775 in the window of an AD. The dial and strap caught my eye and I went in to try it on. I was surprised that the 44mm watch actually felt quite comfortable on my 6.5 inch wrist. I had owned a Luminor Marina many years ago — always missed it — that one was either 40 mm or 42 mm in size..  Anyway, this past Friday I decided to buy it. I have a calf strap with deployant on order. Seeing many of you post Panerai photos pushed me over the edge.

It is truly a large watch (and heavy) so it takes a little getting used to! This will be my daily wearer for a while I am sure! Glad for the pop of color right now — fall color for the changing of the season— and the white dial, lume, and manual-winding movement are so appealing.

When I tried on the watch earlier in the summer, the young sales associate knew nothing about watches. Ha! That kind of put me off. I actually called the NYC Boutique to see about buying a watch from them. But, traveling to NYC right now seemed too challenging. Fortunately, the sales associate on Friday was very knowledgeable about watches — especially Panerai and Rolex. By the way, no new Rolex models in the store; not even any literature. He did note that watch sales overall had been strong this summer despite the pandemic and related economic worries.

While perusing watches, as he prepped this one for sale — I looked at used watches. I saw a Cartier de Must (quartz) with an intriguing dial at about 26 x 33 mm. Mmmmm.... I may go back.
