At the forefront of horologic innovation
While all brands have their creative teams, select brands also put significant investment into R&D. Aesthetic and mechanical creativity are what usually came to mind when thinking about horology. But I slowly came to learn about and appreciate the work that goes into materials innovation and adapting that to create impressive pieces. Brands that immediately come to mind are those like Moser, AP, De Bethune, and Panerai. To me it makes sense that a brand whose existence and history are founded on equipping and enabling military objectives would also be at the forefront of materials innovation (just like you see in modern day military efforts). So, reading more about Panerai’s development of watches using Ti-Ceramitech, BMG-tech, Carbotech, etc has prompted a different level of respect for the brand. For now, Carbotech pieces have been most interesting so far because of its additional aesthetic features.
I hope to learn more about other brands’ efforts in this innovation space just as I’m curious to see how this affects interest in the market with new generations of watch wearers.
Beyond marketing hype and the usual markers by which people value watches (and brand names), does anyone else see significance in such material innovations, or are they more a fad?
