Yes, servicing a vintage can be expensive, if you send it to the Manuf.
But it is the same for Patek, Vacheron, Rolex ( yes, yes, a big service on a vintage can be very expensive, most of all if you send it at the appropriate service at the Manuf ), and so on.
The local and competent watchmaker is an excellent solution, indeed.

I paid around $1200 to have my Compressor Geographic serviced 3 years ago in Fort Worth, TX. I was not happy with the additional quote of $1000 to replace the crowns, which JLC stated had dis-colored white paint. I declined the crown replacement. $450+ us...
