You can't believe the Hype...

The auction house and some hype style sellers always like to use exotic words sell what can easily be called a damaged dial.

Tropical - Star Dust - Spider dial - and that is just a few for damaged dials.  I will take a perfect gilt dial any day over a hyped damaged dial.

Sure there are some perfect undamaged dials that have turned "Tropical" - brown that is but 90% is simply damaged.

Good luck to the buyer of the "Exotic Blackout".

Maybe we all should start damaging our dials to make the "Exotic" and more valuable according to the auction house sales people.

Tomorrow in Geneva, the Antiquorum auction " It appears that the dial has had some form of oxidation that has caused the luminous material to fall off, leaving a very interesting ghost out effect in sharp contrast with the white writing on the dial" Are t...

With the vintage Rolex :) How much?

A bit exaggerated but not far from other"exotic" turn outs.... Won't be the first time I scratch my head .... If they advertised iit,it s because they ve been supported by years of irrational behaviours from collectors.... Some people loves it.....crazy u...

A very creative take on the situation!

The marketplace will judge the merits of this particular aging effect, but there's no telling whether rational thinking will prevail. Of course it is more fun to imagine a world where this watch turns around and sets an auction record for its model type.....

Clever wording

Auctions houses are very good at that. And there will be some people who will be seduced by it. Thank you for pointing this out. I noticed this lot already but didn't give it much thought as it was not appealing to me. I think they are maybe also referrin...

Missing index or missing lume plots

 By: Bill : November 9th, 2013-11:24
Not exotic or prototype just more hype. If you want the lume plots or the index markers removed from you sub not a problem they can be scrapped off = damaged dial not rare prototype. I must admit they look pretty cool but there are several example of thos...

Bill you raise a good point. And helped me think about those watches in a different way. Thank you. Have a splendid weekend! Best Edmond

Vintage double reds and Newman bi colors are one thing but I think "tropical" and "interesting" is a joke. They are faded worn out dials!

Vintage pieces, in general...

If I completely disregard the pricing of some of these vintage pieces, I do feel there is cosmetic merit to "degradations" such as this. I think, some of the so-called "tropical" dials are indeed quite beautiful. Yes, the "ghost out" phrasing is questiona...

I like the clover analogy. nt

So price X2 because it has a rotten dial...... I don't get it :( How long will it take before Bamford or a similar company makes a sub with a 100% black dial and only white writing ? LOL

Well the very name

the hucksterism of the description - it rates along with one of my favourites descriptions you see -- "original refiinished dial". To my mind I think there are potentially two seperate issues here. The first is the description - which I can't really add a...
