and please dont forget either how people get bigger. Each generation gets bigger/taller. most people today can wear 40-42 mm.
another thing. I really think watches used to be too small. I suppose this was due to fashion. before quartz it was an achievement to make calibers small and compact just as precision was a measure of quality. this is not really something we consider very important (generalisation!) anymore. I was confirmed in my opinion on this last night watching a movie from the 50ties. I took notice of their watches - all where tiny - placed on the middle of the wrist with A LOT of space on each side. not well proportioned on the wrist. Fashion????
do we see people who buy 44-47 mm watches that are really to big for their wrists but just wont accept this because they are in love? Shurely we do. But just a passing flavour, I dont believe that. I believe the BIG watches are a GENRE of watches that will continue to expand. just as you have a genre of dress watches, tool watches ect. the horological landscape just broadens. what I would like to see was the manufacturers take advantage of the big case and use that as an oppertunuty to do something interesting with the movement just as for example IWC and JLC have.
anyway Yves, i like your comment.: "Will all the bigger timepieces sold today disappear from the planet suddenly, I don't think so." to my ears it says it all. well if they do become unfasionable i guess a lot of diehard panerai fans will be happy ;-) and I will get me that 5070 at discount ;-)
