When I first started collecting,

I heavily weighted quality finishing in my collecting criteria. As I continue collecting, quality of finishing is dropping in priority, and historical significance is rising. That’s why I’m turning back to vintage watches.
I still love commissioning pieces from talented modern watchmakers like Shapiro, Coyon, Bexei and Voutilainen. But I feel less and less inclined to buy off the shelf independents solely for their finishing prowess. Somehow, that feels intellectually hollow to me.
There is a lot of attention spotlighted on finishing these days with the meteoric rise of macro photography and social media. I’ve learned a lot from these macro studies.
But when I’m sipping a nice glass of bourbon and admiring my collection, I’d rather be steeped in history than bevels.
