Getting more of the timepiece certainly makes for a better composition. Shooting macro for the sake of ... Not always the best. Gives more context , IMO.
See that you are evolving with your shot selection. And what a joy and privilege to witness the process.

In some ways macro photography is like golf: harder than it looks, with lots of technique needed, frustrating at times. And when you "hit" a good shot, it feels great but sometimes you can't recall what you did to make it work! Keep after it -- you're off...

That's a really good picture, and if you did not mention the methods used, I would not have guessed. I'm not with the SLR's as well, just using what the marketing people call a serious compact - which I believe is a term coined just to make people like me...
