Watchmaking in the Nordic Countries

We have all heard of watchmakers like Kari Voutilainen, Urban Jurgensen, Sarpaneva, Linde Werdelin, Torsti Laine, Gustafsson & Sjögren (GOS) watches from Sweden but there are many more who are making amazing watches in the Nordic region that are rarely or never mentioned on our forum. We will Explore those Watchmakers today.

Reima Koivukoski is an independent, artisanal watchmaker based in Helsinki, Finland, who produces customized, completely handcrafted mechanical timepieces. Operating out of his atelier on Annankatu, Helsinki, Koivukoski is known for modifying vintage calibers, manually fabricating cases and dials from scratch, and utilizing traditional haute horlogerie techniques like Grand Feu enameling.

















Pietari Kupias is an independent Finnish watchmaker who creates highly detailed, hand-finished mechanical watches from his independent atelier in central Helsinki, Finland. Following a successful background in industrial design, Kupias transitioned into watchmaking and co-founded his workshop in 2022 alongside fellow Finnish watchmaker Reima Koivukoski.















Kortela Valta is an independent, artisanal watchmaking duo from Porvoo, Finland, formed by watchmakers Roope Kortela and René Valta. Both are graduates of the prestigious Finnish School of Watchmaking. They are highly regarded for their ultra-high-grade hand-finishing, and Nordic minimalism.













Rönkkö Watches is an independent brand founded by master watchmaker Antti Rönkkö in Espoo, Finland. The brand is known for blending centuries-old classical haute horlogerie hand-craftsmanship with dark, poetic themes inspired by Finnish mythology, folklore, and the concept of "Finnish Silence". Alf Lie 1836 is an independent, ultra-luxury watch brand with deep roots in Norway, owned by the Saastad family, that creates bespoke, handmade timepieces in Geneva, Switzerland.











Juha Eskola is an independent watchmaker based in Helsinki who creates elegant, highly finished, traditional dress watches by hand. An alumnus of the Finnish School of Watchmaking (class of 2015), Eskola is known for building bespoke and very limited-production timepieces that utilize heavily modified, hand-finished vintage and mechanical movements.His work is characterized by unique artisanal elements like hand-hammered casebands, hand-filed indices, custom moonphase complications, and exquisite traditional movement finishes like black polishing, anglage, and gold chatons.















Rune Bakkendorff is a rising independent artisan based in Copenhagen, Denmark. He blends historical Danish watchmaking restoration techniques with avant-garde mechanical architecture, creating highly limited, collector-tier bespoke timepieces.















Straum is an independent Norwegian microbrand founded in 2020 that designs Swiss-made mechanical watches inspired by raw Nordic landscapes. Founded in Oslo by industrial designers Lasse Roxrud Farstad and Øystein Helle Husby

















Carl Gustaf Watches is a Swedish watch brand founded in 2014 that blends minimalist Scandinavian design with Swiss-made precision. Their timepieces pay tribute to historic Swedish industrial craftsmanship and metallurgy, particularly the legacy of the historic Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori rifle factory in Eskilstuna.
