There’s obviously no bad choice between these two!
I really like the look of the Lange, but don’t have any experience of it. I have tried on the salmon dial 5236 and I have owned the blue dial version for 6 months. I was looking for a grail watch that I would keep and pass to my daughter. I wanted a watch I would love, but which my daughter could easily live with.
For what they’re worth, my observations are:
- I like the appearance of the salmon dial version in pictures but, when I tried it, I really didn’t Iike the salmon colour on my wrist. It was too pink/orange for my taste. I prefer the tone of the Lange’s dial from the pictures. With that said, the iridescent blue dial 5236 does it for me. The change of colour at different angles really brings it to life and makes it interesting;
- platinum case (rather than gold for the Lange?), with platinum deployant and an additional solid platinum case back;
- the cyclops layout of the date is incredibly easy to read, rather than have the information spread across the dial (although I’m sure it’s no great hardship to read the Lange, and the big date obviously gives you the main piece of information you are most likely to need);
- the silicon hairspring provides some anti-magnetic properties (I have had a couple of watches get magnetised recently so I appreciate some protection against that. I don’t believe the Lange has any anti-magnetic properties);
- the movement with the platinum micro-rotor is attractive (arguably not as attractive as the Lange, but still pretty);
- Patek stand behind the timekeeping of their watches (I have grown to like and admire the accuracy of my Rolex watches and so I wanted a good degree of accuracy in my grail. I don’t believe that Lange have a particular accuracy standard, but I could be wrong);
- there’s a Patek dealer in my nearest city. For Lange I would have to travel to London for servicing. Not a big deal for me, but again I was thinking of making my grail as easy for my daughter to live with as possible;
- the 5236 has been a pleasure to use these last 6 months. It’s a good size (I prefer medium to large watches), stylish, elegant, has a deceptively simple appearance and it’s unobtrusive (the same might well be said of the Lange);
- my daughter loves the 5236!

so take this with a grain of salt, but what gets me excited in this comparison is the Patek! For me it's the blue version... *sigh* Really thinking of a 5236P or 5172G. I know I am a chrono guy more than a perpetual guy, but it's close... good luck!
I have tried on both...the Patek in blue...
...tough call. I've always liked the Lange with the time on the right (Daymatic) and the PC has this layout. Both could be slimmer but the Patek has a slight edge here. I wish they were both slimmer and smaller.
The Lange 1 Perpetual gets my vote.
Lange mastered the look and technical complexity perfectly. The Patek, which normally stands out on its own, feels "normal" in comparison.
For me the Lange 1 looks better
And I like the instantaneous jump. I have heard some issues with them but not sure what to believe as maybe that was 2 YouTube videos. I like the in line pc layout but would choose the blue personally. For you, see what sings to you on the wrist!
Lange for me.
Even though I like the Patek very much, I find the Lange much more interesting and I don't think Patek has anything over Lange in terms of craftsmanship. It may be that Lange wins that comparison. This is what a friend of mine calls "champagne problems". ...

In line perpetual for me.
To my eye, I prefer symmetry on a dial and thus I have not gravitated towards any Lange 1. I would also mention that 5320g with salmon dial is quite nice and could be an option.

The blue dial is hard to beat, it really looks fantastic. I’m looking to add a salmon, or solid rose gold dial as is the case for the ALS, into my collection. I also like the tone of the Lange dial as you point out and lean towards the Lange for that reas...
The Patek 5236P has a micro rotor caliber
with a wonderful architecture, the dial layout is cleaner and the 'padellone' case has a great history ( check here ): so I would personally choose it over the Lange 1. Have a nice weekend. Best, Emmanuel

I'd say the Patek wears smaller. The Lange is a larger and more massive watch when considered holistically and not simply by stated diameter. My videos include exact measurements of thickness and lug-to-lug plus some wrist shots to better illustrate both ...
Yeah exactly.
You can even change the strap, use it as a daily watch. Lange is more wow at first look sure, but using such a wow watch anytime is a challenge. I think it should also depend on your daughter, what type is she, more gold bracelets and necklaces and chic? ...
This Lange is a lot more special, interesting, iconic, etc
This Patek is a solid watch, but I don't see anything that special about it.
