Horological Meandering

The 6 habbits of highly effective watch collectors...

1. Wear long sleeves.  Pull your sleeves down and hide your watch behind when walking into a crowd, or resting your wrist on a table to type on a keyboard, etc...

2. Keep your watch wrapped in a clear plastic film between wearing.

3. Try to hold and operate your watch with a jeweler's or microfiber cloth, rather than touching the crown and buttons direct with your finger, especially on watches do not have any scratch resistance properties.  This has one additional benefit - minimize fingerprints and greases on the watch.  I suspect these are the primary reasons why knowledgeable dealers and manufacturer staffs only handle watches when wearing white gloves.

4. Avoid laying down your watch directly on a table or other hard surfaces.  Use a piece of soft cloth or anything to cushion the watch from the table.

5. Buy watches that are made with a scratch resistant material.  i.e. ceramic, aluminium composite, Grade 5 Ti, DLC coated, rubber over steel, etc...

6. Buy 18K gold watches.  i.e. non-Rhodium plated white gold, rose gold, yellow gold.  Gold is soft enough that fine scratches on polished surfaces can be easily removed with the Cape Cod cloth.  You should not use Cape Cod Cloth on brushed surfaces.  On steel, Cape Cod sometimes adds more scratches than it removes, so these days I only use it on polished gold surfaces.  Platinum is another soft matel, but I do not believe it can be easily polished by hand.

JMHO of course.  Can't think of another tip to make this into the seven habbits. smile
