I think you're right that the reason it's so hard to compare brands is because you're buying individual watches and not entire brands. But I think the flip side of that is you are paying a premium for the brand as well so it has to count for something.
I do love AP's skeletonized movements better than both VC's and Patek's, especially in the Openworked Royal Oak Tourbillon. After reviewing AP's Edward Piguet and Jules Audemars collections again I have to agree with you that there are some worthy pieces (especially if it's equipped with the 3120 movement) in there now (much better than the slightly outdated knowledge used to write this) but I still see the lines as needing more harmonizing to present a more coherent and stronger brand image. I think the Millenary will become quite the iconic piece in the near future and still believe that Patek will never release anything remotely similar so perhaps saying that AP risks becoming a mono-watch brand is a bit of an exaggeration.
And yes, the fact that AP really needs to do better than modular chronographs is perhaps something we can all agree on.
