OK, I stand partially corrected...

Magnus,
I appreciate you coming to Gerald Clerc's defense and I appreciate the data that it is a family member running the business.

The fact that Gerald Clerc is a great guy, has I'm afraid nothing to do with how I see this category of "Watch brand"

I'm afraid one of my acid tests for a brand is how well they maintain value in the long run, others are the consistency of their message and products. With the big one, after sales service to existing clients, which to me is the "achilles heel' of many brands...that is another discussion thoughwink
I even like the look of a couple of their watches, but I still see the business, as a marketed driven model, rather than superior product and compelling watchmaking. I know nothing of their aftersales service, which may well be an anomaly, and very good.

So, as the old saying goes, my opinion is mine, and it hasn't dramatically changed of Clerc watches. It is their right and option to run their business as they see fit.

And in the spirit of the Purists, I was sharing from my perspective and passion, my opinion to a question that was posted here.

Cheers,
Tim

HI all and good day! what are the general opinions about CLERC watches??? is the c609 a real manufacture movement or "exclusively made" by an outside firm?

From what I know...

And according to their dreadful (navigation and tiny images) website, they use a modified ETA 2892 caliber. So, no it is not a manufacture caliber. IMO another marketed Swiss brand claiming a long history, founded in 1874 blah, blah, blah.... Sorry if I'm...

thanks

Thanks for your prompt and thoughtful response!

I think you are mistaken, Tim, Clerc is indeed an old family business...

and is still in the hand of the founding family, Clerc (what a surprise ;-). The current CEO is GĂ©rald Clerc. It is true that Clerc focusses their efforts on creating really well designed and constructed sports watches, e.g. a handsome diving watch with i...

Generally, I agree with you, Tim ...

... however, before a watch manufacturer, or brand, can prove its steadiness in value and service, it has to be "new" for a time. You cannot generally dismiss a 20 years old job applicant for lack of experience, if you are searching a "fresh spirit". Cler...

On the website it says Clerc was founded in 1874. I am just wondering why I can't seem to find any vintage Clerc watches ? Did they have a different name back then? Thanks, Dean

You mean like finding a 18th century...

I can't seem to find any Clerc watch from the 19th or 20th Century which strikes me as rather odd given their claimed founding date. I remember seeing Clerc watches appear I guess in the early 2000's. Would love to put the record straight as their website...

Maybe...

its because they started as a jeweller? I think to recall this piece of information, and I have two images of this early 19th century bracelet box on my hard drive. Hope this helps, Magnus ...

Perhaps

I did find some small pictures on their website that seem to lend credence to their claim, including a storefront sign, C.Clerc and some pictures of watches that look like they were from the 1970's. Thanks, Dean

Yes, but its actually quite a shallow presentation...

if you want to claim history, prove it. Here I am totally with you! Best, Magnus

Not a manufacture caliber....

they differentiate themselves primarily on the basis of their designs (unique case and associated features) and still being managed by a family member (gerald clerc). happy watch hunting! kyle
