No problem with a time only. The only problem can be the date. For most of the perpetual calendars, the only way is to set them forward ( with very few exceptions ).

With a simple date, it is safer to set it forward, too. Safer doesn't mean that you cannot set the date backward, but the mechanism of the date may not like it.

when it stops, never sure if it's AM or PM on the dial so by convention I do the following... advance until the date changes, stop at 6:00 AM, quick set the date-day of week to yesterday, set the relative GMT time, then advance to the current date & time....
