I did indeed launch myself into discovery and I recently met (through Instagram) the owner of the other watch featured in the NYT article. In a nice twist, after I had posted a photo on my IG, the company that made it asked me if they could buy it! Regard... 

The square lugs remind me of guard towers. Great find!
