Horological Meandering

Impromptu GTG in London

There was a highly impromptu dinner on Monday night at Galvin Bistrot de Luxe on Baker Street starring some Purists: just the four of us, Sid, Anthony, Greg and myself. And a lot of watches!

The food was good - the Liver with sauce Diablo being the stand-out dish, although the Valrhona Delice also scored highly - but the company was superb. The watches weren't that shabby either...

I had foolishly forgotten that I was even going out to dinner with three collectors, so my input was a little disappointing. However, the other three more than made up for it: an unusual and quite lovely Bexei Pure from Budapest, with a beautifully finished dial and movement. The curved sapphire really showing off the Guilloche dial.

Two outstanding Cartiers from the Golden Age: a 1932 with a gold band and the most exquisite chronographe, a mono-pusher (monopoussoir) operated by the slender crown. The blued steel hands on these watches is 80-odd years old, but as bright as the day they were fired. Wonderful.

Not to be outdone. a flourish of the shirt-cuff brought out a Jaeger LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon. Not un-impressive, to say the least. I've never actually seen one of these in person before; to say it was incredible would be an understatement. This was closely followed by a Chopard Tourbillon. These two seemed to hit it off, as they ended up sharing a bottle of San Pellegrino later...

A quite charming 80s Chronoswiss popped in to say hello, and ended up flanking an LE Co-Axial Omega with quite wonderful salmon pink, pie-pan dial. I'd not seen the Chronoswiss before - moon phase complication with date it a nice, compact case.

For a spur of the moment thing, I think we did rather well!
