Horological Meandering

I can only speak of advertising in the '80s-'90s, but our clients wanted to believe you were successful enough to not need their business, thinking if you're working for them when you don't need to, you must really believe in what you're doing.

I'm sure things are very different in the field today.
But I think a lot of them also just liked having similar interests to talk about when traveling together. I considered many of my clients friends. Although I did have one client who was very professional, very nice, and very cordial, but refused to get too close, personally. He once explained to me that since he had been a tank commander in the military, he had never wanted to get too close to any of his troops because he knew some day he may be sending them to their death...a sobering thought to me at the time. He was saying he didn't want to have a close personal connection to anyone he may find the need to fire someday.
