Bought my first watch (a Rolex 16234) in 2005 with my very first salary, and have mostly been wearing Rolex and Patek at work ever since, without even noticing it.

But in a work environment like mine, where they look at you as a fashion icon if you wear a clean shirt, ironically a good watch is the least of the concerns even for a lower-level employee (which I was up until 10 years or so ago, first as a postdoc then as a tenure-track assistant prof.). A few years ago when they figured out that I have a few watches in the 6 digits, they even sent in journalists to take pictures and ran a long article that was re-launched by the students journal on campus -- everyone took it well, I had lots of fun, and the student evaluations were unusually high that year.
I guess the trick is, both in easy working environments (like mine) and in tougher ones, just enjoy who you are and what you've earned with confidence -- the rest will probably follow and be fun ;-)
