Hi Rip, thanks for your thought provoking commentary.
It is human nature to always want something out of reach. This is of course a positive attribute for our race, as it allows us to continually strive for improvement.
The difficulty occurs when we apply it to this horological obsession of ours. The trick for me is to be satisfied with what each watch represents, in and of itself. For me it’s like appreciating the engine in an Alfa Giulietta as well as a Ferrari Enzo.
It is true that there are Purists who own watches that will likely always be out of reach for me. Some of them probably feel the same about a Sky Moon tourbillon, even though they could ‘just’ afford that Patek repeater.
The focus on watches and away from monetary value works well here. I enjoy sharing the excitement of ownership of all watches with friends on this site. And even more, I like to understand what attracted them to a particular watch. The horological landscape is a rich tapestry with interest at all levels and all price points.
Peace and contentment to you all over this festive season.
Andrew
