Horological Meandering

This is the question posed by my wife when we were out trawling the watch boutiques in Kuala Lumpur earlier today. She says that the watch blogs are full of people mentioning it, but among enthusiasts and collectors, no one seems to be able to give a defi...  

. . . would be affordability combined with replaceability; one that doesn't break the bank, and could be replaced if lost or damaged. Perhaps that's why DateJusts are so prevalent ;-) . . .

I rarely wear a watch more than one day. If I have to worry about various occasions, than I just wear more watches in the day! I like variety and the mood. And I like reading purists and if someone posts a watch I haven\'t worn then I look to go wear it. ... 

Watch is a Breitling superocean on a rubber ocean racer strap with deployment. The watch can take a beating and with the rubber strap it\'s a little more low key. I agree that a everyday watch should be a easy watch to replace and at a reasonable price. ...

Given that most of us have several, I guess a watch that one would not mind wearing daily and that would work for most occasions, even if one chooses another one, so that they all get some wrist time...

... because, an every day watch must fit every situation. That means, it'll be somehow...... a bit boring! ;-) Every watch with character will not fit an every day situation. Either it'll be to edgy, to round, to thick, to colourful, to sporty to dressy..... 

to a watch collector. It just does not exist. Only non watch collectors (can) have an everyday watch. It means that they only have one watch! One as in 1. And only wear that 1 watch. Every day. Can you imagine? No you can't. So an everyday watch is a phan... 

It's a great question, and I think both you and Richard answered it. There just is no such thing.

Definitely lends a new perspective....at least for the non night watch ;-)

You could go the route of durability versatility replacabilty, and possibly affordability. For me maybe a vintage date just real vintage with some color in the dial may do it. A straight stainless grand taille reverso? Maybe. Maybe even one of those paner... 

But definitely one that holds water. I think we generally agree that this one watch thing exists only for those who don\'t care much about appreciating different watches but are contented with that one. Flip side, that would make us a very discontented bu... 

I appreciate many watches but don\'t feel the need to own them. Virtually everything I try on or look at has some fatal flaw. Maybe that\'s my pickiness / OCD / some other undiagnosed psychological problem. Or am I just lacking the \'buy and collect\' gen... 

The JLC is a superb choice, for sure, as would a datejust, a GS to name some. I'm not sure I can be like that guy who "retired" from collecting....is there such a thing? It's probably as mythical as the "one watch" scenario we play out :-)
