Doxa 300 Searambler- a short review
Looking for an everyday watch on a limited budget (that’s another story), and drooling over Arronax’s images of his Doxa, I took a trip to the local WOS just before Xmas. Tried on a 200, lovely and incredible value, but just not quite right. Tried on a 300T but on both Rubber and BOS it was just a little large and ungainly (I have previously owned a number of Panerai), so the SA recommended the 200T or 300 model, neither of which he had.
Coming back here and in one of the Doxa feeds, it was mentioned how easily the 300 slips under a cuff. This was confirmed in another comparison of the 300 & 300T which also mentioned the COSC movement and dome crystal. Now to find one! It must be fate as that evening a hardly worn one appeared on eBay here in the UK and I pounced!
To the review....what a fantastic value proposition it is. It has just the right amount of heft without feeling clumsy, the crown has a good feel both winding it back in and when using it to change date and time. Under a loupe the dial and hands are beautifully executed without any signs of dust, damage and other alien bits floating around (unlike other brands). Not only is it exceedingly legible, but it’s fascinating to look at with a sunburst dial black hour and seconds hand and the funky orange minute hand.I’ve wound it once only in the few weeks I’ve had it, simply to recharge after not wearing it over a weekend. Timekeeping is excellent and as accurate or more so than any other much more expensive watch I’ve owned. The unidirectional bezel is a delight. Absolutely no play in between clicks (120?) and lands firmly at 12. It reminds me of s slightly better Seamaster 300 heritage model.
The only problem I’ve encountered was noticing that one endlink was slipping and on removal of the bracelet it was a bent springbar. I’ve just received a new set of 1.8mm springbars from eBay but enjoy wearing watches on a nato strap anyway and will continue to do so until we get to Summer (if we do!!). The bracelet itself is lovely, no hair tugging and a perfect fit on my just below 7” wrist, I just wish it tapered slightly to a more delicate clasp!
Overall I’m delighted. It’s incredible value, has a rich history, and fits under a cuff. The thinking man’s divers watch!!
