there are definitely some distinctions between the marina militare panerai watches and the JLC Navy seals line
1. historical precedent - the marina militare watches are hommages to historical references to watches actually built for and used by italian navy divers decades ago, the JLC line was dreamed up by marketers a few years ago.
2. Panerai has a bigger name factor and cool "it" factor than the italian navy (no offense intended to italians or their navy) while the Navy Seals has FAR FAR FAR bigger name recognition than the JLC brand. Therefore with a Panerai marina militare watch, the marina militare branding is just enhancing an already cool panerai brand whereas with the JLC navy seals line, JLC is really trying to borrow the macho glory image of the navy seals to sell watches.
3. the key is authenticity, the panerai marina militare watches have authenticity, the JLC Navy Seals line rings of gimmickry. I believe this is something the market intuitively understands, even if they cant verbalize their feelings, and i think this is why you couldnt hope to buy a panerai MM watch in a store whereas you can pretty easily get a new old stock navy seals auto to this day.
