As you know, I own and love both of modern and vintage watches, because there are great specimens in both worlds!
Vintage watches have something most of moderns don't have: Soul. Moderns have something vintage don't have, a resistance to everyday life, such as water, for example.
And as you said, " dinging " a modern is much less painful than on a vintage. Parts are much easier to find.
Servicing a vintage watch like a Rolex is not a problem as long as you know a good watchmaker. Repairing it is more problematic, indeed.
That being said, as you know, once again, I live with my vintage watches. The best example I know is my 6542 and is fragile bakelite bezel. I wear it a lot, but there are things I do without, I just take it off the wrist, when I clean the house or the car, when I do some work on the car, and so on, you got my point.
I guess that wearing some enormous watches such as Panerai in my early days helped me to take care of what I have on the wrist.
Prudence, not paranoia.
I agree with you that most of these vintage Rolex reached a crazy value. But that is not why I don't wear them. I just take care of them. I enjoy them, and cannot think of letting them sleep in a safe.
Best, my friend.
