With the tune that...

Horo kindly set in motion now playing in my mind, I would first like to thank you for a superb topic. It articulates well something which each of us all either have thought about, done or will do so sometime down the road as we continue on this horological hobby of ours.

Looking at what is in the drawer today, and answering your question, "if I could start all over again", I would most likely end up exactly where I am today.

Why? I liken each piece individually and as part of the overall collection to be a categorical archive of my life. Each piece whether regularly worn or not, are all used, kept, cherished, loved and remembered not only because of the the physical aspect of the watch per say but are noted with the memories of the learning/chase/purchase/usage incurred alongside the most important part of my watch purchases, serving as a physical albeit horological catalog of what stage of my life I was in at that time....

Yes of course, it would be nice to be rid of the pieces purchased in heat/horological lust. But in my case at least, they are still kept, sometimes still used and mainly serve as a daily reminder that operating in the heat of the moment usually results in a lifetime of regret. I choose to keep physical memento of these reminders to keep me focused and sane as temptations abound and memories fade all too quickly in today's overly marketed and hyper-everything horological universe.

Now hypothetically speaking faced with the situation of building up a new collection from scratch... I would go for a crew of 12 that would garner a lot of wrist time as well as best epitomizing "watches of my time".

PP 5078/GF 24 seconds/ALS Datograph/ALS RL PLM/Kari Decimal Repeater/Kari CH 27//Dufour Simplicity/Rolex Deep Sea/Journe Resonance/VH Antiqua/MBF HM1/RM 009

Thanks again for a great topic.

I would have concentrated on a few Patek minute repeaters: 5078, 5074, 5016, all in platinum...presumably through auctions...plus maybe one or two independents, for instance: Dufour, Voutilainen, in other words, five watches instead of fifty. Note that th...

A great question, Fernando, and one that has been exercising the mind a lot lately. Starting all over again (at the right time, of course)? Easy. Dufour's Duality, both Simplicities, a Haldimann H1, a Voutilainen Decimal Repeater and Daniels' Millenium wa...

As for a beater? There are two Simplicities in the list - one for formal, the other one on a Nato strap... Cheers, pplater.

came back to my mind Horo. What a catchy tune & so relevant to this post. A nice thought if only we could 'turn back the time'.So many mistakes could have been avoided but we wouldn't be who we are now, with battle scars and all. Cheers fernando

Tough question, Fernando. I think I would sum it to around 10 / 15 watches, a kind of blend of the nicest Vintage and Modern watches. I would certainly get a selection which would look like something like this: Panerai 6154, the epitome of strenght and el...
