Horological Meandering

There I was yesterday walking in London looking for the new FP Journe boutique when I saw this lovely clock displayed at the window of Asprey which was located next door. My visit to FPJ lasted less than three minutes as I could not wait to turn back to A...  

I think so too. A watch with similar complications might cost 100 times more!

Yes it is indeed rare to find something wonderful that can be bought instantly these days but it just shows that if the timing is right and if Lady Luck is smiling at us, anything is possible! And for the record, I am on the waiting list for a 40mm Elegan...

I have been trained to wait for watches so 4 to 5 years is fine with me

Not quite a day date in platinum but a lovely clock is for everyone to enjoy whereas a watch is only for me to enjoy!

I was a bit worried about the reliability of the quarter repeater and grand sonnerie and the clock expert at Asprey was kind enough to spend a prolonged amount of time to explain to me what to do and what not to!

Love the fluted bezel. Where have I seen that before? 😁

Indeed the bezel resembles a Patek Calatrava and I would be delighted if it can function half as reliably and as accurately as one!

And I agree. They have downsized again and again with a number of ownership changes unfortunately. Still, they carry some really nice things and remain somewhat a hidden gem relatively to the big brands.

As I am unable to afford a watch with these complications, I am more than satisfied and pleased at being able to find a clock that can entertain me

I just got lucky as this was the first one made and Asprey would like a plaque placed on the wooden base to recognise this.

Not a huge fan of the Rolex tribute aspects but that is a handsome clock!

And I can see why you fell in love with it. Can you tell us more about the age, movement and the manufacturer? As I recall Asprey was a “reseller” in that they white labeled others work.

According to their website they seem to make great stuff.

Clockmakers in my opinion do not receive the recognition that they deserve in comparison to watchmakers. Companies like Matthias Naschke, Sinclair Harding, Comiitti, Kieninger, Erwin Sattler, L'Epee all make some wonderful clocks.

All the best in your search for an ideal clock. There are so many good ones around that one would be spoiled for choice.

and is made by a German company called Kieninger who make high end clocks. I am afraid I can't tell you much else except that only a handful of these clocks will be available at Aspreys. Mine apparently was the first one made.

I see you’ve gotten over worrying about your wrist size. When something is that beautiful size should not be a concern.

Although the dimensions of the clock are also important as I have a small home but this one was perfect size wise. It is always great to see a clock and immediately know exactly where it will reside in one's home!

I have mentioned to Behzad, the clock expert at Asprey that you will be visiting and he only has one clock left similar to mine although he has two others with a makassar wood base and a white bezel instead of gold. Hope you manage to get there and appare... 

I also bought a new clock this week . Definitely a good distraction from our watches sometimes.

I now have two nice mechanical clocks so I am a happy man!

And indeed, it can be very dangerous to walk around Bond Street in London!

Bond Street is an accident waiting to happen! It should carry a health warning
