It is not about steel or precious case

Feb 03, 2021,18:51 PM

The price of a watch is based on too many variables

1. Who is the watchmaker- here the pedigree of the person behind the creation evidenced by his/her past offerings become the vital metric

2. How is it made? - anything handmade, traditional and painstakingly finished to the T ; means yet another notch up the pricing pole

3. The complication - a simple two hander versus additional functions ; make the price climb higher and more so from an independent watchmaker.

 4. The demand/supply equation ; which drives the price North mostly when an independent or boutique manufacture producing limited pieces is involved

5. And lastly the Collector perception of value; which is the mystery ingredient!!

Cheers.

Help me out a bit here please.

I ohhhh and ahhhh over watches like everyone else here. Sometimes I have a hard time comprehending the prices of some I see. Here's an example, I am by no means disrespecting the watch/watchmaker but what makes a stainless steel, TIME ONLY leather strappe...

What is the watch in question ?

 By: tristan.led : February 3rd, 2021-09:23

unfortunately the simple forces of offer and demand.

 By: agyzace : February 3rd, 2021-09:27
what is unfortunate, these forces are being tampered with from various side of the market. But we have to live with it and find the watches that make us happy, all things considered. All the best, Alex

The watch in question is Laurent Ferrier

 By: Thomas_3 : February 3rd, 2021-09:47
round time only watch, stainless steel, 40mm micro rotor.

I hope Laurent Ferrier does well and I like his personal track record

The price you mention is indeed high but we are talking about Veblen goods here so price is irrelevant (the highest its price, the more in demand it is given the halo status it confers to its owner). However, I have the feeling that quite a few of his wat...

Thanks a lot👍

Without knowing the watch you're referring to I don't know how anyone could give you more than speculative answers. However...

...in my opinion, stainless watches, when compared to their precious metal counterparts, are a better value for the money. Considering that tooling maintenance can be more time consuming compared to easier-to-machine gold and platinum, machining stainless...

Nothing objective makes any watch worth what we pay...whether that's $4K or $40K.

Value is subjective. Market prices are set by our collective subjective values. If you're asking for subjective analysis, then share the identity of the watch, and we can all give our opinions. Hard to provide any other meaningful response. Cheers, John

Well said!

Maybe the hours of skilled labour spent for the finishing

How you would really audit that I’m not sure

The simple fact is ...

Connoisseurship, ownership and collecting is about much more than price.

I am possibly redundant,

 By: Thomas_3 : February 3rd, 2021-10:52
but then again I usually can't remember what I had for breakfast. The topic seems to generate good discussion though. I don't think I am alone with my opinion/thoughts.

It may be worth considering that we generally avoid focusing on the price of watches.

Definition of "Price":

 By: John-E-Mac : February 3rd, 2021-16:49
According to one definition in the Merriam-Webster dictionary: "Price" is "the amount of money given or set as consideration for the sale of a specified thing." Simply, the price of an item or service is what the seller is asking for said item or service....

For me at least, I consider the real value of a watch to be roughly whatever the cost of making it is.

 By: jleno : February 3rd, 2021-17:38
Some of the main things to consider there are the ratio of production output to employees of the brand, cost of materials/facilities/equipment, level of finishing, and complication. Greubel Forsey for example produces about 100 watches per year with 100 e...

Good reply a plus one for me. I just ordered a Roger Smith that will probably cost me $200,000 plus and is a three-year wait. That is the best example of what it cost to make a watch, the buyer is a decision-maker of whether it is worth it or not. Of cour...

Thanks for your reply, and huge congratulations on the Roger Smith!!!

While $44,000 dollars is a fixed amount of money

44000, has different meaning to different people. Yes it’s not a small amount of money But it doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. A better formula might be . what does $44,000 mean to someone relative to the individuals desire/perceived value of a pa...

+1. Exactly. We're judging this watch based on our own individual values and making comparisons to other established players...

A Laurent Ferrier may seem expensive when compared to a Patek or a Vacheron. But then look at the hair spring, look at the finishing, look at the fact that LF doesn't have the high volume production and the scale that PP and VC have that can lower costs t...
