A few tips before assembly
Dec 23, 2023,02:21 AM
I got the same kit in the summer of 2022, not sure if they've made any updates, but here's some tips, as there's more parallels to watchmaking than you'd expect:
- You need to be careful with the parts, there's a lot of very small ones, and being wood, they can break.
- Make sure you prepare them well, sanding them well, but without going overboard and affecting the shape of the wheels and other moving parts.
- You'll need more wax to lubricate the parts than the little stick they give you, it needs to be applied quite liberally.
- Be careful when cutting the plastic ties that hold the mainspring together, it's quite a big spring and it'll snap with a lot of force.
- Some people have replaced the wooden pivots with metal ones to get it to work properly.
- I never got it to work properly; if I move the parts by hand with a bit more force, it'll tick, but I couldn't get it to work under its own power, even after a few disassemblies and reassemblies to adjust the parts, re-sand them and add more wax. I gave up in the end as I just couldn't figure out why it didn't work as I expected.
Look at the reviews on Amazon, there's more tips there, and it should help you get it properly assembled and working. Good luck!
