2 watches only

 By: Harry2 : August 2nd, 2017-18:37
Team, we have just been discussing in the Patek forum a 2 watch only collection. I'd like to open the discussion with this question: If you could only have 2 modern watches at any cost, what would they be? This is not supposed to reflec your actual financ...

I'll start with mine

 By: Harry2 : August 2nd, 2017-18:44
I think I'd go for a 15202 because I love that watch, and then a Do a Sub 300. Searambler. Both independent, cool combination. Also very interesting

No seconds

 By: xxn : August 2nd, 2017-22:05
...

Oh yea! [nt]

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:04

I know you said "No seconds" but

 By: Tiggermelad : August 3rd, 2017-03:49
I'll second that. ...

LOL! [nt]

 By: amanico : August 3rd, 2017-03:52

Let me humbly step in

 By: Alex25 : August 18th, 2017-01:23
...

tough question

 By: Hahnpaulo : August 2nd, 2017-18:50
either a PP 5170 RG + PP 5990 or a Datograph pl + Lange 1 Mondphase RG

Nice answer

 By: Harry2 : August 2nd, 2017-18:57
Heavy hitting combinations!

thinking better

 By: Hahnpaulo : August 2nd, 2017-19:00
any combination among them would work

Tough tough question

 By: patrickmaniac : August 2nd, 2017-19:11
1) 3939h 2) opus 5 Cheers PAt

Re:

 By: Mark : August 2nd, 2017-19:15
Patek 3940P and 5131R

Two watches as my only collection....

 By: john c : August 2nd, 2017-19:21
....would be the IWC Grand Complication Platinum (case & bracelet), IW9270-20, and the Credor Spring Drive Sonnerie or Minute Repeater. Best, John.

WOW [nt]

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:04

only two watches? I would rather commit hari-kiri

 By: Hororgasm : August 2nd, 2017-19:58
i cant think that way......program malfunction. shutting down.........Horo

LOL...

 By: δΈι‡Žγ‚Œγ„ : August 3rd, 2017-01:52
Calm down Horo, calm down I know it's a HUGE problem on your side :p

I should've added a disclaimer!

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:05
Poor Horo

Good idea!!

 By: Hororgasm : August 2nd, 2017-22:42
Best, Horo ...

Always inspired by you!

 By: Kit333 : August 2nd, 2017-23:07
you da man!

Ok this mad me rethink mine

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:05
I completely forgot about Roger Smith! Oh man...

Okay, serious answer for me is that there are two brands I love: Breguet and F.P.Journe, so one of each.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : August 2nd, 2017-20:09
A pt Boutique Nacre Lune for FPJ and a Breguet Marine chronograph in wg on a bracelet. Done.

Rolex Submariner and Patek WT

 By: emcquillan : August 2nd, 2017-20:44
and if modern meaning current production I actually stand by this. 5230G and modern Sub.

That's actually a very good combination.

 By: TheMadDruid : August 3rd, 2017-06:22
You cover a lot of uses with those two. But for the life of me I cannot see even answering this question, never mind trying to make it a reality. I'd be dead with Hororgasm.

Good answer

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-11:44
You couldn't go wrong with either

Since it is a theoretical exercise...

 By: Mike H : August 2nd, 2017-22:17
I shall exclude both financial constraints and my recent new situation so in this theoretical exercise manual wound watches become possible again... I would then vote as modern watches for PP 5370 P + Voutilainen (my Vingt-8 as it is is fine πŸ˜€). And I wou...

Nice answer!

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:07
Unfortunate about the manual wind, fortunately for you though there are great automatics out there!

Absolutely yes !

 By: Mike H : August 3rd, 2017-04:31
And for me the most beautiful automatic movement on the market (here we are talking modern watches as per your brief is certainly the micro-rotor from Laurent Ferrier. It is a real beauty and the finishing is incredible. Of course if you also consider vin...

Yes indeed!

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-11:46
Laurent Ferrier movements are stunning. Yes indeed this was 2 modern watches only. Don't worry, we shall do vintage soon

Dear Harry

 By: Alkiro1 : August 2nd, 2017-23:38
Only two OMG 😱 Can we add a zero please 😁 Well, I think I would go for the Romain Gauthier Logical One and a minute repeater. Why not the JLC Master Ultra-Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon πŸ˜‰ Best wishes Alkiro

And you only gave me two choices 😁

 By: Alkiro1 : August 3rd, 2017-03:06
Best wishes Alkiro

Well if we can have anything

 By: jml_watches : August 2nd, 2017-23:42
Hi Think I'd have to go with a 5078p with a black dial. As for my second - think I'd have to go for a JLC Reverso Duo, though would be mightily distracted by Memovoxes! Cheers JML

I think I'd go for a memovox

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:09
As much as I like the Reverso!

It's a difficult choice

 By: jml_watches : August 3rd, 2017-03:31
Did also think second watch could be something as simple & robust as a Seiko five & just wear the other on high days & holidays. Cheers JML Ps if you asked me next week it could well be a memovox

I think I will mirror Keks

 By: Baron - Mr Red : August 3rd, 2017-00:32
5650g and 5370p. Covers most bases for me and two totally fascinating watches.

Those two would really satisfy my requirements... ;)

 By: keks : August 3rd, 2017-01:25
Within reason that is. Both very wearable and complement each other well. Obviously if there are absolutely no constraints whatsoever it would be possible to dream up unobtainiums, but assuming the exercise is to name two modern pieces that are somehow re...

I though very hard between 5131P and 5650G.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : August 3rd, 2017-01:27
.....the latter wins for me as it does have that dual time capacity AND it has the stunning advanced research angle too....also, its a watch that can be worn in the pool. Yep....within reasonable parameters, those two would do it for me. A truly hard prob...

two plus two would be a different thread ;)

 By: keks : August 3rd, 2017-01:37
or a modern five watch collection with requirement each is in a different case material....

this is such a great game [nt]

 By: Baron - Mr Red : August 3rd, 2017-01:47

I agree!

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:12
I'm going to do some more themes later. More USEFUL criteria. The goal will be to conduct mental exercises that help us to collect and enjoy watches better!

Mind bending two watch collection

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:10
The only problem with that is choosing which to wear in the morning. One for each wrist?

One on each wrist is the way to go!

 By: jml_watches : August 3rd, 2017-07:15
I do it already as have too many to choose from otherwise ;-)

if two vintage it becomes easier...if two modern its ok too...but if its just two including vintage and modern...agggghhhhhh

 By: Baron - Mr Red : August 3rd, 2017-01:44
For me, the two vintage would be 3448 and 1665 Mk2........the two modern would be 5370p and 5650g...... But if i had to pick only two from all....agghhhhh.....yes, torture.......but it would be: 3448 and....agghhhh.....5650g.

That vintage duo is just sublime

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:15
I think that could be the peak. Imagine this, Time travel. Buy both watches new, return to the present day. Stride the earth like a demi-god.

Just as in the WS I have learned to obey the rules. In this thread the question was about modern watches...

 By: Mike H : August 3rd, 2017-04:42
...and I was waiting for another to come asking the same question for 2 vintage watches only ! 2 modern + 2 vintage was hard enough, I don't think I could narrow it to 1 + 1 as mentioned in another thread... If 2 vintage only my choice would be PP 3448 + ...

Great choices.

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:13
This would be a very fun combination.

Oh yes. [nt]

 By: amanico : August 3rd, 2017-02:28

it is not going to happen...

 By: mahesh : August 3rd, 2017-01:32
it is not going to happen...it is not going to happen...it is not going to happen... Ok now, a humble manually wound pair... Reverso and 5196g Best, mahesh.,

Continuing the humble suggestions:

 By: Thomahof : August 3rd, 2017-01:44
5960A and 5230G Thomas ...

I like this one!

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:15
Very cool

My picks are Nautilus (5711/5712/5980 although the one I have is 5711) and Hublot (can be any model)

 By: δΈι‡Žγ‚Œγ„ : August 3rd, 2017-01:49
My Hublot is a special one (Red Devil KP) so I think I'll hang on to that one for a long time. I have 2 other Hublots but one will go to my son. I think Rolex is also a 'must' but I prefer vintage Rolex to modern ones. Casio G-shocks are also good picks b...

G-shock and Roger Smith

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-02:16
Most hardcore watch combo ever! Was mentioned above

If money wasn't an issue

 By: Kitcaptor : August 3rd, 2017-02:20
Original Datograph Flyback + FPJ CMB

Hmmmm. Not easy.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : August 3rd, 2017-03:45
But let's go with 5370p and Datograph (not the ab/auf, the first version).

Nooo...you gotta keep Kari! ;) [nt]

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : August 3rd, 2017-04:26

Damn, you are right.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : August 3rd, 2017-05:07
Ok, I am changing to 5370p and KV GMR.

I know.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : August 3rd, 2017-07:40
It's so hot here, my brain is melting.

Very easy, these two will do nicely

 By: Maltie : August 3rd, 2017-04:05
...

I am shocked by that first choice.

 By: TheMadDruid : August 3rd, 2017-06:24
No I'm not.

As a no date kinda of person...

 By: Questlove : August 3rd, 2017-04:56
I think for me it would be 5370p and a steel ceramic daytona white dial...

More difficult than I thought

 By: NML77 : August 3rd, 2017-05:57
But I would go with a FP Journe grande sonnerie (since this game is probably the closest I will ever get to having one) and a Patek 5990

These would be mine... I didn't really have to think too much either (DB28 and AP Diver Chrono)

 By: CGJ0 : August 3rd, 2017-06:58
For around town and out for dinner: For life in the water, by the beach and outdoors (a lifestyle I'd love to have a lot more of if I had the disposable income) ...

You are killing us

 By: Gelato Monster : August 3rd, 2017-08:05
I refuse to answer. 8-)

It's a tough one! [nt]

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-11:40

Bloody difficult.

 By: dr.kol : August 3rd, 2017-08:54
Both of the chose watches would be outside my top three if the question would be "choose 5..." However, there are complication which I would like to have if only two watches were the limit. Among those are: - Perpetual calendar - Chronograph or split-seco...

5372P-010 is sublime...

 By: keks : August 3rd, 2017-10:31
Makes for three of us so far going down the road of a 5650G... and two of this would go 5370P and you 5372P. Very similar tastes I must say... choice between 5370 and 5372 is a tough one but the black enamel Breguet dial wins over the perpetual for me but...

5370 for me

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-11:39
If I HAD to chose. The Patel choices have been very strong here. Great taste from the Purists

Perpetual is a minor aspect.

 By: dr.kol : August 3rd, 2017-12:48
Look at the movement in 5372 it's Caliber CHR 27-525. Best, Kari

Movement is sublime on the 5372...

 By: keks : August 3rd, 2017-14:09
But it is amazing on the 5370 as well.... Both amazing pieces. But that black enamel dial....

Speaking about the movement:

 By: dr.kol : August 3rd, 2017-14:16
Perfection vs. Perfection. Best, Kari

Nice choice!

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-11:40
If you can only have two, might as well go all the way!

3940 & 5711

 By: andrew_sg : August 3rd, 2017-18:58
not a bad way to go imo ...

If I had to own two Pateks

 By: Harry2 : August 3rd, 2017-19:04
This would be it

Two split seconds: RM004v2 and the Patek 5372p

 By: pfang56 : August 3rd, 2017-21:22
Just love the extraordinary complication and the engineering behind these two pieces - with the Patek a "dressy all around piece" and the RM for fun. One can dream eh? Peter

I'd go with....Breguet 5347 double torbillon in platinum and keep my old gold over ss speedy.

 By: maxmanzo : August 4th, 2017-04:52
But if we consider the speedy too old, I'd opt for the new moonphase iteration Breguet 5347 in platinum my old Speedy new moonwawtch moonphase Kind regards, Max ...

Nice!

 By: Harry2 : August 4th, 2017-16:35
Very different from everyone else here. Good to see!

Thanks Harry!

 By: maxmanzo : August 6th, 2017-08:31
I'm just a newbie, I'm not able to take into account so much brand history or philological meanings, still learining and I see this is the right place! Kind regards, Max

Your taste is your taste mate.

 By: Harry2 : August 6th, 2017-16:23
Go with your heart always. I think you've got a good thing going

Thanks again for your words! Taste can change over time also.

 By: maxmanzo : August 7th, 2017-00:51
For instance, I didn't appreciate Picasso until I studied and understood cubism. I just was ignorant (=not educated). Now I see it's a great idea to have Pia's front and back in the same painting! So I consider myself a WI (=WIS minus the S). The process ...

Well put my friend!

 By: Harry2 : August 7th, 2017-01:16
There is much to learn in this hobby. Mountains of information.

This will always be a fun question! :-)

 By: sham1 : August 7th, 2017-01:20
Assuming money no object (if only ), I would have the Patek Philippe 5959P and the Patek 5078G. Slim, wearable coupled with amazing movements! ...

The chrono movement

 By: Harry2 : August 7th, 2017-03:13
Is just to die for!

The very best!

 By: sham1 : August 7th, 2017-04:23
and in such a small and tiny package too

Your answer covers the question brilliantly

 By: Alex25 : August 18th, 2017-01:28
Fully agree. Maybe just consider some other repeater from PP or VC

but if money was an object as it always is :-)

 By: sham1 : August 7th, 2017-01:29
the decision becomes super tough as I love all the watches in my small collection. But if I was forced at gun point to keep only two, it would be the Patek 7200 London edition and the Ptaek 5940G ...

That's a pretty good result

 By: Harry2 : August 7th, 2017-03:15
For any forced at gun point situation good choices, you have excellent taste in my opinion. The 7200 is a very special watch!

Made for ladies apparently

 By: sham1 : August 7th, 2017-04:24
but I saw its potential and seized the opportunity!!

two watches that here none has but which movement wise are vastly superior to many of the other brands

 By: georgeszaslavsky : August 7th, 2017-03:01
The first one is the Breitling Chronomat Airborne B01 30th anniversary edition of the chronomat. It is a very well made and robust watch featuring Breitling well acclaimed and proven B01 movement which has self resetting hammers, ability to adjust date at...

Great response

 By: Harry2 : August 7th, 2017-03:12
I like to see watches off the beaten path, these two are very cool. I like the tech in the Breitling.

That's a good combo

 By: Harry2 : August 7th, 2017-11:11
A George Daniels is the peak! And paired with a Nautilus, you've got all your bases covered pretty well. The Nautilus seems to be so much more practical than the Royal Oak too. Someone above mentioned George Daniels and a G-shock. Now that is cool!

Two moderns? A GO Senator Chronometer . . .

 By: Dr No : August 7th, 2017-10:23
. . . which represents the pinnacle of modern watchmaking balanced by value, and most any manual wind GS . . . . . . which represents the same balanced by absolute cost. Art ...

Nice!

 By: Harry2 : August 8th, 2017-11:39
I'm very interested in the reasoning behind your choices. I don't know that much about GO and their technical innovations.

One Lange, one Patek

 By: Langeholic : August 12th, 2017-23:31
Tough choice, but I'd have to go for the 5370P and Turbograph

Late to the party...

 By: rnaden : August 13th, 2017-00:27
My choices would be a Breguet Marine 5817 in steel and the Lange 1815 in WG. For me, these two covers all I'll need.

The 1815 is a brilliant watch

 By: Harry2 : August 13th, 2017-00:41
For me it's the only competition to the Lange 1

Not unless they have one with a rubber strap

 By: rnaden : August 13th, 2017-05:57
Don't quite like bracelets and the leather won't make it in the water even though the watch can ;-)

Great question! A tad bit late on the response.

 By: Obeezy : August 13th, 2017-08:25
For me, it would be the Voutilainen Tourbillon 6 and the Patek 5370. Adding these two to my collection would mean game over! Well, at least for awhile. Here they are... ...

Late response

 By: Harry2 : August 18th, 2017-01:56
Brilliant response!
