Indeed the market was not yet ready for a high-end quartz. But we can see how well FPJ elegante is doing now and this is a brand with no history in quartz. Albeit that FPJ has tremendous respect for quartz and a stellar brand name today.
The 80188 was introduced as a novelty to test the market out. Either way, they wanted to make a special piece to mark the 40th anniversary 1970-2010 of GP in quartz. A few months after SIHH, Luigi macaluso passed away suddenly. In 2011 Kering bought over GP.
New management and new ideas.
Thus the 80188 was forgotten because of a variety of reasons.
Both Macaluso brothers pushed for the 80188 to be made and contributed to the design. Stefano and Massimo.
It’s interesting to note that the quartz movement was made specifically for the 80188 and never used again. The evo3 42.6 mm was also customised specifically for this reference. Custom dial. Case thickness. And the center links satin finished as opposed to polished … this was not done for any other evo3.
This is also the ONLY laureato where the word “Laureato” does not appear anywhere. Neither dial nor caseback.
This model existence is almost unknown.
Those that don’t care about rarity or significance in the equation of collectibility can just ignore this entire comment from me.
For me, this watch is special is many ways. The last laureato made by Luigi Macaluso and a special one in they ways I mentioned above.
And as a last note, I love the looks as well. ❤️
