Girard Perregaux 1966 manual winding chronograph: A missed opportunity.

Some 5 or 6 years ago, the Vintage 1966 manual winding chronograph, ref 49529 was a missed opportunity.

The good thing? The manual winding movement, which is said to be in house, while I think it is born from the collaboration between Girard Perregaux and another company ( Lajoux-Perret, if my memory serves me well ).

Now, the less good things: The presence of a date, which ruins the dial, and the too centered sub dials, which proves that the movement is certainly too small for that case, or that the case is too big...

The presence of the date is most problematic, in my opinion, as it could be much  nicer without...

Here with a superb slate grey dial.

The last regret I have is that this new ( for that time ) born chronograph never saw some interesting iterations... Imagine this chronograph in white metal, with a black or a blue dial... Without date.

We would have a winner! Curiously, no evolutions...

Yes, a real missed opportunity!

Best,

Nicolas

Would make a very nice 36mm chrono.

Likely that's what the movement was made for.

Every company should have a tantalum watch.

Not only watch companies, either.

Yes. Didn’t the first versions in white gold with a white and blue dial come without a date?

mix that with a case reduced to 38mm so the subsidiary dials aren’t too close together and it would have been a hit. At the original price point. I remember thinking “ohhhhh, so close, but not for me.”

Also ! [nt]

Unfortunately one of the worst examples of the "small movement-big case" syndrom.

The date positioning is just awful! Definitely could be a winner with a 38-39 mm case and without date.

The one that got away 😮 [nt]

GP seemed to have made a lot of missteps in past few years

I love my 1966 full calendar in palladium and scuderia foudroyante, but most of their new stuff doesn’t excite, excluding their high end stuff of course..
