A. Lange & Söhne

If its good enough for Philippe Dufour, its good enough for me . . .

I have always loved the Lange Datograph. However, at 39mm, it is smaller than I prefer (and it wears small). Likewise, I have always loved the Langematik Perpetual, but it is 0.5mm smaller than the Datograph. Thus, I have admired both pieces from a far.

Approximately two years ago, Lange introduced the Datograph Perpetual, which combines two of my favorite watches in a single case. Moreover, Lange made it 41mm . . . squarely within my desired case size.

Lange initially offered the Datograph Perpetual exclusively in a platinum case with a white dial:

I have handled the platinum version several times. Unfortunately, notwithstanding the confluence of so many components that I was looking for, the watch did not sing to me in its original configuration. I found the white dial against the platinum case rather banal and sterile. The monotone dial washed out the wonderful complications. IMHO, the watch lacked warmth and character. Thus, I passed.

Fast forward a year, I was looking for a new platinum or WG piece for my collection. I looked at the platinum Datograph Perpetual yet again, but was no more inspired than before. Thus, I continued to research. Then, I discovered that Lange was introducing a new Datograph Perpetual with a WG case and a grey dial. I checked out the photos and it was love at first sight. In contrast to the platinum model with the white dial, the new WG/grey dial combo was warm and full of life . . . it exuded character and intrigue. It was exactly what I was looking for!!!

However, there remained a problem. Lange had not yet released my dream watch. Thus, I could not handle one in the metal and confirm my response to the photos. Moreover, it would be several months before the watch was released, and even longer before one made it to an AD without being presold. Thus, I took a chance and ordered one sight unseen. I put down a deposit and eagerly/impatiently waited the three months for the watch to be released.

Lange shipped the first WG/grey dial Datograph Perpetuals to the US last week. I was fortunate enough to get one of the first (if not the first). My instincts were spot on. This is an absolutely incredible watch. Every detail of this watch is superlative. The case/dial combo is gorgeous . . . warm and lively, yet also understated and traditional. The grey dial is iridescent, changing colors depending on the nature and angle of the light (the below photos wholly fail to capture this remarkable quality). The movement is a work of art . . . the most beautiful movement I have ever seen. The column wheel chronograph operates with effortless perfection. The perpetual display is wonderfully integrated, and the one button synchronized advance of the calendar displays is invaluable (IMHO, all perpetual calendars should have a one button advance of the calendar displays) . Every surface of the watch, both outside and within, is finished to exacting standards. I am seriously tempted to occasionally wear the watch upside down.

Enough of my drivel – here it is:

Craig
